Quote from Henry Silvestre on January 11, 2020, 8:01 amQuote from fenn68 on January 11, 2020, 6:47 amProbably no better than any other defensive stat (they are all "questionable") but a new stat for INF is out on MLB.com. Outs Above Average (OAA). So, for your amusement for "qualified" players in 2019:
1B .... Hosmer ... 39th out of 40 with an OAA of -6
SS ... Tatis .... 33rd out of 35 with an OAA of -13 (spectacular is overshadowed by inconsistency ... especially on coming in a balls)
3B ... Machado ... 32nd out of 35 with an OAA of -5
So based on this new metric ... the core of the Padres INF defense is near the bottom for each of the positions ... not the image we have believed.
Will add
2B .... Kinsler was 19th out of 38 with an OAA of +1 (but he is gone)
2B .... Garcia was 23rd out of 38 with an OAA of 0 (guess that makes him the best INF for their position)
2B .... Profar was 30th out of 38 with an OAA of -3 (guess he fits right in).
Yeah that stat is flawed...

This is considering the non arb players at league minimum is at $583,500, saw it some where, maybe MLBTR. Also have double checked some numbers with spotrac web page as well
The 26 man roster at $136.8M.
The balance of the 40 man roster at $8.2M all being non arb players at $583,500.
The dead/buy out money is at $13.5M with Oliveras, Kinsler, Loup, and Warren. Of course, not sure about how Kinslers money is going to be considered going forward, so it could reduce that by some.
Grand total is at $158.4M± for the 2020 season.
Actually is $151.4 or so as only 26 get paid.. You assume guys like Ona Olivares etc.. On the 40 man get minimum ..they don't... Only if they are on the 26 man .. And in the MLB .. And if they get called up at the time of the call up then yes they get minimum BUT not the 575k or whatever it is.. Just a pro-rated amount for the time up
Henry, you're right about only the 26-man getting full MLB minimum salary. But counting exact same dead $ as Booster (all Kinsler's 3.75 MM), all new settled arb salaries, rounded up $600K for the 9 minimum salary guys on 26-man, 6 MM for Pomeranz (4 MM salary, assuming 8 MM Signing bonus split equally over the 4 years it's payable = + 2 MM ), and the SALARIES Machado, Hosmer, & Myers are being paid (30/20/20 MM. 100% of their signing bonuses have already been paid out)...
... I have Total Payroll right now at: 145-146 MM.
Booster, Sportrac & some other sites might be prorating signing bonuses across life of contract which only matters for teams going up into the penalty. I go by $$ Padres are actually spending this year. This # will creep up mostly when guys put on IL & someone else called up to take their place. A simple way to factor the other 14 guys on 40-man is to count them at 100K each when in Minors (my total has not done this yet). Team also has max total of 3.5 MM in incentives to Richards, Stammen, & P. Johnson. So effectively, "real" payroll is about 150 MM...
I know we all probably wish Pads had done/would do "more" than they already have, but think back to the Moorad years... have to be pretty happy about a SD team in this uncharted territory $$ wise!

BTW...Renfroe gets $3.3 mil from Rays.
BTW Alex Colome with the White Sox got $10,532,500.
A full $3.5 mil MORE than Kirby.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 13, 2020, 1:16 pmI don't think anyone mentioned this low key add but the Padres signed RHP Jerad Eickhoff to a minor league deal.I've always liked this guy.Had some early success in 2015/16 in Philly.AJ is stockpiling arms in AAA/AA with major league experience. Can not have enough experienced pitching considering the new rules going into effect in 2020.

Connections with Tingler (maybe Preller) since was drafted by and had his minor league development in the Texas organization.

Going to be a very, very, very crowded ST sorting out who makes the ML, AAA, AA pitching staffs ... with all the experienced veterans signed to go with all the returning AAA / AA (journeymen and prospects) ... has to be over 50 vying for the 39 spots.
Setting up for most (if not all) the legit internal prospects settling in AA while all the journeyman veterans working in AAA.

Quote from fenn68 on January 14, 2020, 5:06 pmDonaldson signs a 4 year deal with MINN.
Wonder if that opens up some trade opportunities for the Padres with WASH or ATL or STL. Doubt the Arenado trade materializes ... so those teams seem to think they need more to compete (does not have to be a 3B) or even a front line player.

Nice to have the depth. We all know there will be injuries to at least a couple ML arms in ST. Eickoff feels like AAA rotation piece rather than legit contender for 26 man consideration.
Still have concerns about depth at C. Teams are grabbing 3rd string guys right and left lately. I guess some of those will be released at end of ST and available.

Quote from MrPadre19 on January 15, 2020, 5:51 amAt this point Torrens is our 3rd Catcher....available if needed.
Certain to be in AAA.
Surely we wouldn't sign another?

Quote from fenn68 on January 15, 2020, 7:05 amI have no issue with Torrens as the 3rd catching option ... probably better than any of the flotsam and jetsam still around as an alternative .... at least he has future potential.
