Took a quick look at the current bullpen trying to minimize the projection of unproven prospects to see where the Padres stand based on 2019 performance (remember 2020 is win or heads will roll):

The likely core as veterans:

1. Yates
2. Pomeranz (L) ... only 29 RP innings in 2019 (1.88 ERA) plus 75 innings as a SP ...? impact of back to back use
3. Stammen ... 82 innings (3.29 ERA)
4. Strahm (L) ... 33 RP innings (3.27 ERA) plus 82 innings as a SP
5. Perdomo ... 71 innings (4.19 ERA)
6. Johnson ... 59 innings (1.30 ERA IN JAPAN) ... but in MLB previously ... ineffective

========= 2 to go

7.  Castillo (L) ... big future but only 9 innings last season due to injury .. not going to carry a big workload (AAA?)

8.  Guerra (5.19 ERA / 9 innings) ... out of minor league options ... only 30 innings last year in first year of pitching .. not going to carry a big workload

9.  Baez (3.25 ERA / 30 innings) ... total 57 innings with minors .... ticketed to return to starting in minors

10. Reyes (7.62 ERA / 26 innings) ... total 71 innings with minors ... ugly in ML

11. Munoz (3.91 ERA / 23 innings) ... total 59 innings with minors

12. Bednar (6.55 ERA / 11 innings) ... total 69 innings with minors

13. Wingenter (5.26 ERA / 51 innings) ... total 55 innings with minors

I look at that list of 6 through 13 ... yes, potential but hardly reliable for 2020 (ML performance and innings pitched considered) to cover even the two slots ... along with the unknown of Johnson. Take out Stammen and need the for three slots. That would work for a 90 loss team but not a team that is aiming at a winning season.

Left Quantrill off the list who ... if he makes the 26 man .. serves more a long man / spot starter than a classic RP.

600 RP innings (3 1/3 per game) is what was needed for the median in MLB. Starters going about 5 1/3 innings for that median team. Basically that is how the game is played except for some of the elite SP ... but not the norm. That is going to be a stretch considering the options for those last 2 slots so expect a lot of use of the IL and minor league shuttle for the "kids" to makes sure the ML squad has the better options through out the season while not over using (and potentially injuring) the young arms.

Undoubtedly some of the games Stammen blew last year were some UGLY blowups. I just think the ugliness of those few blown games has drastically and unfairly skewed fans views of Stammen. The guy led ALL OF BASEBALL in Holds last year with 31. Stammen is still a strike throwing machine who generates ground balls and LHH struggle mightily against him. We are lucky to have him back especially at that price.

I think I saw somewhere he also lead the league in blown saves?

So if true there's also that.

Edit:Just confirmed...lead the league with 9.

Also lead the league in Holds but still....leading the league in Blown Saves will stand out to someone that watches every game.

This is what sticks out in my mind I guess.

Names like Andrew Miller(t-14) and Doolittle(t-7). Those two are quality relievers. What really got me though was the guy who was tied for 4th most blown saves in mlb last year-Josh Hader. This is the guy who won reliever of the year, came in 3rd on the all time strikeout percentage list and who most of baseball is looking at as undoubtedly the best reliever in the game(while totally overlooking our own Kirby Yates). If he is top 4 on that list, how bad can it really be?

Well Hader also had 138 K's in 75 ip.

Also a .81 WHIP and only 41 hits allowed in 75 innings.

So yes....even good Relievers have blown saves but when the rest of your numbers look like that....you still win Reliever of the Year.

But Yates was still robbed.

More Saves....much lower ERA....almost the same WHIP.

This is another reason the Padres need to start winning.

Our players get overlooked.

As a Jaguar fan I know this only too well.

Get this...Gardner Minshew won Rookie of the Week in the NFL "SEVEN" times this year in only 12 games started.

Seven weeks out of 12.

No other Rookie even won it "twice" yet Minshew isn't even on the Ballot for the Pepsi Rookie of the Year.

Also Josh Allen lead all Rookies in Sacks and 2nd in QB pressures and isn't on the ballot and Nick Bosa will probably win it with less stats because he's on a winning team.

It's complete BS....kinda like the Gold Glove awards in MLB.

Wrong question ... who would have a better WAR in 2020: Chirinos (at $5.75MM plus a $1.0MM buyout of 2021) or Hedges (at $2.9MM). Both, at best, would be the option v. LHP (25% of the time).

Note that Chirinos by far had his best season last year playing for the Astros but before that ... so-so with the Rangers. Then again, Hedges is Hedges. Chirinos is 35.

I would bet Hedges has the better WAR and is cheaper.
