Off Season Moves and discussion

Not sure this specifically leads to another deal, as many are suggesting. Again, as I mentioned yesterday, Lin made it very clear that running out of starting pitching last year, has not been forgotten in the front office.

With Snell not ready, Clevinger a big ?, Not wanting to rush Gore, Paddack having UCL issues last season, and Weathers still TBD, more depth was necessary IMO.

Cutting salary at some point makes sense, and for a LF, but not sure it happens before game 1.

Gotta believe this means a trade of Hosmer is coming….probably the one to the Mets.

Either we add in Manaea or this allows us to give them “both” Weathers and Paddack to get it done.

But,if Manaea leaves after this year we’ve lost two young controllable Starters and suddenly our SP depth goes from extensive to non existent.

Either way,I can’t see any reason AJ makes this move without a corresponding move coming.

Just makes little sense otherwise.

Well, Manaea is very good and really clogs up the pitching roster (pending other moves). FA after this season and carries a $9.750MM salary (Padres go over CBT threshold). Holiday is a 13th round pick last season in the ACL.

Giving up Angeles (who seems to have real potential but a few years out) is not a problem give the other middle INF prospects (and ML players) still around. Martinez is "maybe" a 5th starter.

Good deal the could be better if it leads to a follow up deal for that illusive LF.

It's gotta lead to something, right? Even in a vacuum this feels like another move is coming. We already had a seemingly solid 5 ready for the rotation, plus good depth. Add in the fact that those 5 were already paid big league money and cap it off with the fact that adding another SP hardly feels like a good enough reason to push us over the luxury tax threshold, and it feels even more like something else must be imminent.

I hope it's Snell sent packing to secure a LF

We agree that the Padres could be in a bad situation with all the one year deals with SP ... and that should take any of the prospects out of any deal.

I doubt the Mets deal resurfaces BUT given the Mets pitching issues and big money invested to win in 2022 they may not be as interested in a prospect in the deal but may be more motivated if Paddack was replaced by Snell ... but if Preller insists Hosmer has to be part of the deal (and the money associated with that) ... the deal should be DOA. (side: Preller's push to include Hosmer in various deals probably has killed deals that could have been useful).

Padres are now $3MM over the cap ... move Snell and would drop about $10MM under less what ever the pay is for the return piece. Snell for Smith (plus a prospect) even up?

Different angle ... MINN still needs SP (and rumors had SD linked), they could have in play Kepler, Kiriloff, or Larnach depending on which SP the Padres offered. CWS may be in the market (both SP/RP) given the recent injuries and they are built to contend. TEX spent a ton on middle INF but a very weak SP group (and they have money to spend). So, still some other teams that may be lusting for one of the Padre arms.

Why all the desire to trade Snell all of a sudden?

He’s my pick of the pitching staff to have a great year.

Snell and Grisham…..

Like this deal.  Been advocating for one of the Oakland starters for awhile.  We have depth behind Angeles and Manaea a certainty over Adrian Martinez.  Opens up other possibilities.

It's his attitude and approach. He has all the talent but it does not seem like he has the IT factor to consistently.

I think this might just be a phantom injury to give him a couple of starts in the minors to get himself straightened out.

Or just intense side sessions with the ML club under the eye of the new pitching coach then a quick drive to Lake Elsinore for a rehab start or two.

That also buys some time for Preller to continue trade talks during April.
