Luke Voit?

31 year old Luke Voit?

Luke Voit with all of 73 HR's to his name...at the age of 31?

Ugh......I'll let you guys get excited about this.....

So we're back to dumpster diving now? Man, we've fallen a long way in the past 24 months.

We still need Soler or Meadows or Reynolds.

Yep, and both prospects and money are still there available given Voit is low cost and Lange was not a primary prospect trade chip.

With Voit who is likely more DH than 1B and with Hosmer still around ... not sure Solar (at what seems to be his contract level) fits anymore if they have to play him in the OF. Maybe Preller after discussions with his agent on contract (or his desire to come to SD) shifted gears and moved on Voit.

If there is a next move ... probably focuses on a legit OF. Beyond Reynolds and Meadows ... might have Mullins in the mix (doubt Balt will deal him) and maybe have FA Conforto in play IF they want the risk of rebound and he is willing to go multi-year at a reasonable price (contract structure).

I think Voit is going to be surprisingly good for the Padres.  Have to throw out 2021 because of meniscus tear in March, followed by oblique injury and then Yanks acquisition of Rizzo left him virtually no consistent playing time after he healed.  But from 2018 to 2020, looked like a very solid hitter.  Expect him to return to those norms and be a consistent producer from the DH spot - 1b, not so much.  With an expected salary of a little over 5M in 2022, should leave the Padres some room to make further improvements to the team.

Lange has potential but looked lost last year at the rookie league level.  If he ever gets his stuff under control and develops better secondary pitches he could be very good, but that's a big IF for any young pitcher notwithstanding the possibility for TJ surgery.  Would have been nice to see him develop but very very far away.

Late to the ML but a career wRC+ of 133 which is better than almost all the Padres and in 2020 #9 in the AL MVP voting. Most importantly he had a national auto commercial gig.

If the Padres want to contend ... a major upgrade over ?????? as DH.

Idol speculation ... might this make it easier to deal Hosmer? Voit is not a good defensive 1B ... but neither is Hosmer ... so no loss of defense. Preller would not have to worry about finding a back fill for 1B.

Story to Giants?

Hope he picks Boston!

A potential ripple effect of trading for Voit:

  1. Voit is penciled in as the full time DH
  2. With the DH there is little need for PH

What does that mean for the four catchers in the roster? Campusano can be optioned but Nola, Caratini, Alfaro cannot (and don't particularly want to see any of them in LF.

ML need catchers be it starters or bench ... so should we expect one moved in a deal?

Preller does deals in bunches…soon as one is done he’s on to the next one.

Games start today…..I’d expect more moves this weekend.

If any more are to come which I think they will.

Thanks, buddy.

So lets say that Preller is in love with the idea of Mazara playing LF (against RHP) we still need someone to play LF against  LHP. I have scoured the MLBTR at the remaining FA OFers, and the only option is Kevin Pillar (especially with Castellanos now being reported as signing with PHI). Could be a decent platoon option, and Pillar might be our best option as a back up CFer.

Incentive loaded low base contract to Pham may be on the horizon - he has hit LHPs well in the past.  Not my favorite move to make but slim pickings, money-wise.  Bring up Mazara and alternate with Pham in LF.  Mazara and Profar also can play against RHPs to rest Myers.
