Off Season Moves and discussion

Just the rumors I've seen.

Usually where there's smoke.....

If making this deal frees up enough, when added to the Frazier move and maybe Strahm/Lamet ,to sign a guy like Schwarber or Castellanos, it may be something AJ considers.

I also heard we are "really" in on Castellanos.

Just thinking any move to save money has something to do with trying to add a "Big Bat".

It could be worth it to the Marlins to basically "buy" Campusano.

You can't move Hosmer unless you get someone to replace him( and no, Cronenworth is not the guy)

Why not put Hosmer between Tatis and Machado( we all know how much AJ loves going RLRL)

Cronenworth, Tatis, Hosmer, Machado, Myers, etc......

Not sure they need much more payroll space to fit in either Schwarber or even Castellanos … their AAV projection is not all that much.

If they are at $184MM and non-tender Lamet and Strahm will drop to about $177MM. $20MM +/- should get one in the fold and allow still some room to fine tune.

I am hung up on the full position player roster and if they moved both Hosmer and Campusano .. then signed Castellanos (probably as DH) the the starting line has Profar the starting LF and someone at 1B out of Rosario, Kim, Caratini …maybe Alfaro if he came along. Add Padres would (for 2022) have to kick in at least $10MM (plus at least $5MM/year for the 3 out years). Padres are not saving all that much to redeploy to get a better bat … and lose a future (low cost) bat in Campusano.

=====

If they want more payroll room … better off dealing someone other teams may want and NOT attaching a prospect … maybe getting something useful in return. To that end, Darvish is aging on a large contract with 2 years control … we have seen in this current feeding frenzy SP is in mega demand … should be “easy” to move.

I would rather gamble on Musgrove, Clevinger, Snell, Paddack, and Weathers (maybe Gore or Martinez) as the SP over having a couple of Profar, Rosario, Kim in the starting line up (bench fine but not starters).

Hosmer likely will opt out after this season … so self correcting issue. Couple that with Myers a FA … opens up a ton of money to extend Musgrove and/or Clevinger as FA (do both and should only need about $20MM total) and hunt down some replacement bats.

Side, don’t rule out a Castellanos signing with a back loaded deal keeping 2022 “reasonable” to allow for other adds then pop up for 2023 as payroll space opens.

Dont forget that MIA just traded for the stud defensive catcher from PIT, Stallings. And he is under control for 3 more years. Have to question why MIA would want Campusano. Plus they are rumored as seeing Jesus Aguilar as a DFA candidate, so why would they want the lesser performing Hosmer for more money over Aguilar?

I would imagine IF Preller goes after Alfaro, it is for a good portion of the catching duties here, allowing Nola to DH/1B platoon, and Campusano have another year in AAA until he is really ready and healthy.

With our injury issues last season, and Clevinger coming off TJ surgery 2, I think it would be nuts to trade away Darvish. Lets not forget that in 2020 with the DH, SD had a terrific offense, and really the only piece that is not here that was in 2020 is Pham. Not that difficult to replace him IMO. So keep our pitching, look at signing Pederson for LF, not any worse than Pham, and a better defender, and have the pitching stay healthy.

Under the circumstances I would not deal Darvish … but if the Padres really really wanted to make payroll space think he would be the best gamble and would likely move the most money (more than either Myers or Hosmer) without creating the offensive hole.

Since I do think they should have enough payroll space to add one impact bat for LF or DH … and some RP support … Padres should be in better shape to contend than most are thinking without making any trade or giving up any major prospect.

Guessing: Castellanos ($23MM per); Schwarber ($18MM per) … plus don’t exclude Suzuki ($11MM per). With some non-tenders could fit in any one … more if there are some backloading contract structures.

To avoid arbitration Padres signed Hill ($1.324MM) and Adams ($925MM).

Just takes some uncertainty off the boards and eliminates some negotiation effort down the road.

Sources:

1. Padres non-tender Wingenter

2. Padres avoid arb with Pagan and sign him for $2.3MM

3. Padres acquire Alfaro from MIA for cash considerations or a PTNL.

Padres also non-tender Strahm and Castillo. Along with Wingenter they all represented injury plagued 2021. Did not save much in payroll but opened three roster slots … one for Alfaro and two for potentially the two RP they have been in negotiation with: Suarez and Garcia.

Still roster room to work with Guerra and Norwood … both out of minor league options and unlikely to break the 26 man roster out of ST.

The Padres acquired catcher Jorge Alfaro from the Marlins in exchange for a player to be named or cash, the club announced on Tuesday night.
