NEW CBA

Beginning to really look bad for an agreement … and the start of the season … given the posturing of the owners.

Most outsiders consider the owners offers to be all on their side and little improvement for the union. On top of that the Owners’ side is leaking out the word that they would be willing to loose games early in the season (maybe a month or two) to get their way and the expanded playoffs.

Big money comes to the owners from the playoffs while lesser amounts come from early season games but loss of early games hits the players directly in salary. Apparently the owners just not willing to give.

One agent said expect baseball to start July.

======

In the “take it for what it’s worth” category the sentiments on Twitter seem to be that they’re very close and it should get done today.

Some is just speculation but there are also some legit posts from people “in the know” that seem confident.

Considering the deadline has passed and MLB hasn’t cancelled any regular season games makes me think they really are that close.

Should know by end of day either way…either there are some good signs or there will be cancellations.

Should be a full day of negotiations today … it appears both sides made some key concessions … so more optimistic the lesser issues can be resolved today.

We are seeing the realities of BIG negotiation strategies and that “11th hour” pressure mentality to get a deal done. Both sides say the world is coming to an end … the other side is not bargaining in good faith … leak that the future is in jeapordy. Meanwhile holding back putting any concessions on the table waiting for the other side to blink. Once they are on the brink of one (or both) side really losing money … what was held back from negotiation hits the table and both sides give.

=====

The last concession by the owners was accepting the 12 team playoffs (they were seeking 14 teams). Six per league … will be interesting how those teams are selected … maybe off
best record for the wild card teams to the 1st and 2nd place by Division. Another slot for the Padres.

So the first two weeks of the season have been cancelled because both sides could not come to an agreement......

This sucks

The canceling of April games was always part of the owners plan . They want all of the future growth of money. They offer little in the way of an equitable split of future growth . I don't mean a 50 / 50 split but 95 / 5 offer is an embarrassment . It is nice that our owners aren't the problem for a change. Seidler and the rest have been doing things the right way for the last few years . It's sad that even the NHL has a better partnership with their most important asset than MLB does. They planted stories about how close they were to an agreement ( which was never even close to true ) Then they try and blame the players for not agreeing to their best and final offer . They didn't even make any attempt to negotiate for over 3 months and then tried to ram a terrible deal down the players throats (also part of the plan ) and the ultimate goal of breaking the union . I wish I didn't love baseball and the Padres so much . I've invested way too much of my life to walk away now but that's my problem.

Man I thought when they got close finally on Monday evening they would hash it out on Tuesday.

Ugh!

If there was ever a time in my life where I need Padre baseball its "right now".

I'm going through multiple back surgeries and have had nerve pain down my right leg since last June!

Surgery didn't help....now starting over from scratch.

I NEED baseball to get through this medical mess I'm in and what happens?

NO BASEBALL!

Please don't postpone any more games MLB!

I am definitely pro-union is this mess .... not everything they demanded but clearly deserve a larger piece of the revenue pie.

Don't be sure the Padres are not part of the owners' plan ... maybe not Seidler but Fowler was on the negotiation committee and he is a major budget hawk (no idea how that plays out within the Padres executive offices).

I really don't get upset about the no real negotiation until February. It is wishful thinking that any "negotiation" meeting in Dec or Jan or early Feb would yield an agreement between two sides that are hostile to each other. Wait to the last moment and try to pressure on the other side to feel an imminent loss before concessions are made. Neither side will concede anything unless under pressure ... true in almost all contentious negotiations.

Agree the owners have the luxury of not losing too much by cancelling early season games and may gain that all back (and more) with a shorter regular season keep the races close and more fans engaged plus the added revenue from expanded playoffs. Plus this is a 5 year deal ... if they get the advantage, losing a few weeks (months) in 2022 will be covered by a better deal for 2023-26.

Players on the other hand lose money starting from day one ... and given many of the careers are nearing an end (or just will be short) ... that will be a permanent loss to them.

The other popular theme in the media that we could be playing but for the owners lockout ... can play and keep negotiation. Owners are not dumb and remember 1994 when they did that only to have the union go on strike August 12 and we lost the 1994 World Series. Also, they had a mediator for that negotiation and he was a total bust.

So basically the owners are on script with the economic advantage ... don't like it but the owners are rich because they know how to play the negotiation game. Oddly the 2020 pandemic season ... shortened ... may bolster the owners resolve giving the a template for late revenue boost (presumed).

So, how long with the players hold out (without pay) before proposing some painful concessions ... remember the last offer on all issues is from the owners ... ball is in the Union's court to proffer a counter. Owners are not going to negotiate with themselves.

Good luck.

I was so planning to go this year and visit my aging Mother at the same time.

Between my medical and of course the Lockout that went out the window.

But seriously....next year?

I'd love to get as many of us together for a couple days as we can.
