National League Division Series

Gotta feel a bit bad for Garcia.

On the roster all season....contributing off the bench.....then suddenly not a part of the Padres biggest series in decades.

It's the right move considering we need arms more than bats...but still has to sting and prob. was not a fun conversation having to give him

the news.

I think it's fair to say that top prospect Morejon has earned his spot.  But who would have bet that the Padres would be carrying:   Patino, Campusano, & David Weathers on a NLDS playoff roster at the beginning of the year?!?!  Patino with very shaky limited MLB experience, Campusano the 1 game cup of coffee (plus IL-was with team), and Weathers- None!

Worth keeping in mind that the decision process for a very defined limited role in a 5 game playoff series is entirely different than that for Opening Day of a 162 game season & the long term development of these guys.   The fact they're here now does NOT mean they/Padres are best served by all of them being in MLB with the Padres next March.

I like the Weathers move, though it IS "out there".  Could be used to finish an inning vs a LH hitter, simply as a "new" power arm, the emergency stopgap if Clevinger can't go very long, but the best fit is as the guy who has to soak up 3-4 innings in a losing effort to save the rest of the pen for more games.  Better fit than Altavilla for that, and maybe like Patino his "stuff" is better suited to come out of the pen than Gore's, but he's probably been working more as a "SP", so should be able to go longer than Patino right now.

Patino just flat out makes me nervous, but inarguable his "stuff" is better than Altavilla's.  He got used in game 3, Altavilla didn't.

Campusano....  ?  May have just thought of it.  Castro will  likely start at least one game (likely game 3 or 4) if series goes past 3.  Nola might sub into that game late.  Castro might sub in late in others in a blowout loss (or win?).  Need the 3rd C so you don't get to an emergency 3rd C situation with so few position players?  Also, could be some convoluted scenario where he might make sense as a PH, but I can't figure it out.

I want to  see  Weathers pitch. Another glimpse into the future.

Yeah, GG's a pro, knows the deal, knows he's basically not going to play, but still...

I get why the roster is constructed the way it is, but not perfect.  IF a big PH chance comes up, especially vs a RHP, might wish GG was there to take it.   Same true for Mateo...  basically was added & carried all year specifically to be a pinch runner in a playoff game.  Think it's really his spot that is "lost" to an extra arm with no Lamet.

Could come back to haunt, but the Pads were #1 in SB in MLB with 55 (Miami 2nd with 51), and Mateo only contributed 1.  Great team speed, so there's very few position players Tingler would remove from the field with a tight bench for Mateo to PR even in a tie game extra innings.   Maybe just C & Moreland.   Too limited a "use" window given the circumstances.

Careful what you wish for.... if you do, there's a really good chance we're losing!

Weathers is the surprise ... can understand a LHP for match-up situations vs LAD and maybe frees up Morejon to be saved for a start and insurance on Strahm. Just did not expect him to leap over Gore and Castillo.

Padres seem set on Gore NOT being a relief option and Castillo just don't know.

Note: Almonte was DFA to make room for Weathers.

Campusano is likely insurance in-case of an injury to one of the catchers but they don't want to IL him and lose him for the entire series and the next round. Secondarily, a RHPH if they get in a situation with a LHRP .... better option vs a LHP than Garcia or Mateo.

Seems they can't afford to use Profar as DH given they may need him in the field in the late innings. So, probably on the bench vs. RHP (Moreland DH / Pham LF) and LF vs. LHP (Moreland bench / Pham DH). Profar then could go to the INF if needed without losing the DH in the order.

Guessing they see a very limited (or non-existent) role for Garcia in a 5 game set vs. LAD ... a LHH who can't hit LHP. Not sure which starter he would PH for. If my premise is right ... if a RHP is starting Profar and Allen are LHPH ... and both switch hit in-case the LAD switch to a LHRP. If a LHP starts and they switch to a RHRP ... Moreland is on the bench to PH along with Allen. Still, not sure who would be PH for.

Lineup posted:

  1. Grisham (L), 2. Tatis, 3. Machado, 4. Hosmer (L), 5. Pham-DH!, 6. Myers, 7. Cronenworth (L), 8. Nola, 9. Profar (S)-LF

Probably our very "best" lineup, but Pham over Moreland vs RHP a little surprising.  Kershaw tomorrow, so Pham will get at least the first 2 starts.  Buehler likely being a short start might be part of it; Pham might only face him once.

Probably Profar over Moreland ... Pham would have started either at DH or LF ... can hit RHP or LHP. Maybe thinking if they pull Buehler they may go with a LHP and negate Moreland in a critical spot.
