MLB Draft July 9-11
Quote from sportwarrior on July 11, 2023, 12:41 pmRd 15: Zac Addkison, 6'4 RHP from Marshall. Another guy with ho-hum stats (44 BB and 72 K in 72 IP, 4.6 ERA). Probably profiles similarly to Morgan with one or two pitches the Padres like.
Padres: A big-bodied reliever profile with a low attack angle, solid velocity and slider.

Quote from fenn68 on July 11, 2023, 12:45 pmInteresting flow to the Padres draft ... only one pitcher in the first 10 picks (HS kid at #8) ... so far on Day 3 there are 5 picks all pitchers. No idea what that means but interesting.

I'm sure the overall system balance right now played at least a small part. Relatively "heavy" on pitching talent and somewhat lacking on positional. Also, from a development perspective it feels like there's a path to improving raw late round arms with some potentially plus attributes.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 11, 2023, 1:14 pmI'm thinking it's also easier to find a diamond in the rough at pitcher than hitter.
Especially if you're getting big bodied hard throwers.
2-3 years development with Professional coaches could turn some of them into at least solid relievers.
Once you get passed the first 3-4 rounds IMO you need to get guys like this or extremely fast guys or great defenders and hope you can teach them the things they need to improve or they add strength as they mature etc.
Improving the hit tool is the hardest of all IMO.
Easier to add power as they mature and work out...can improve defensively...can add a pitch or pitches can be improved upon with good coaching.
But trying to teach pitch recognition and bat speed and eye/hand coordination is much harder.
The issue is you don't find guys with great hit tools outside the first 2-3 rounds. So you have to get guys like this and coach the hell out of them.

Quote from sportwarrior on July 11, 2023, 1:39 pmRd 16: Sam Whiting, 6'3 RHP from Santa Barbara.
Padres: Fastball sits 91-95 mph with a curveball. Padres may look at starting him.
Rd 17: Eric Yost, 6'1 RHP from Northeastern. No info, but not a ton of strikeouts (57 k in 78 ip)
Rd 18: Harry Gustin, LHP from Hawaii. Decent but unspectacular numbers as a starter (5-3, 3.14 ERA, 79 strikeouts, 36 walks, 1.38 WHIP, 77 1/3 IP)
Padres: Solid curveball.
Rd 19: Adler Cecil, 6'3 HS LHP from Temecula.
Padres: Projection lefty with a low slot and a body to really fill out.
Rd 20: B.Y. Choi, 6'3 JuCo SS originally from South Korea. Literally just said "B.Y." when we first made the pick lol.
Padres: Big-bodied infield with a pretty left-handed swing.

Quote from sportwarrior on July 11, 2023, 2:55 pmInterestingly, the team Choi was drafted from has 4 other So Korea nationals and two players from Japan.

Guess our guys spent some time scouting Abilene Christian.
Have any modern UDFA made any kind of impact? Kirby Yates was one, I believe...

Quote from sportwarrior on July 12, 2023, 11:39 amA bit more on 7th rounder Tucker Musgrove..
The Padres held a pre-draft workout with Musgrove and came away very impressed. San Diego Padres General Manager A.J. Preller was in attendance and took the time to get to know Musgrove, exclaiming the desire to draft the Mobile Ram if given the opportunity.
"Having an MLB General Manager come away impressed just tells you the talent that Tucker has," said Seymour. "For us, he has been our MVP over the last two seasons and is just a perfect example of who we want to recruit here at UM. He loves the game, wants to grow in the game, and is a kid that just likes to be coached. He's relentless and competitive, but doesn't play with an ego. On top of all that, he is great in the classroom and a strong and devoted Christian. He is a coach's dream."

Quote from sportwarrior on July 12, 2023, 11:46 amA bit more on 9th rounder Ryan Wilson...
https://atlantic10.com/news/2023/7/11/baseball-davidsons-wilson-taken-by-padres-in-ninth-round.aspx
"Ryan created this opportunity for himself with a lot of work and effort," commented Davidson head coach Rucker Taylor. "He's very talented and versatile. His competitive nature and toughness are unique. Ryan set a standard for how to go about things that I hope we can replicate in future years. He's successful in everything he does, and I think he's going to play baseball for a long time."
Wilson, from Durham, is coming off an Atlantic 10 Player of the Year campaign, in which he led the league with 17 home runs, 70 runs scored, a .533 on-base percentage, a .737 slugging percentage and a 1.270 OPS. He matched a school record by reaching base in all 54 games and ranked second in the A-10 with a .387 batting average. His 30 hit-by-pitches set a single-season program record, and he also owns Davidson's career hit-by-pitch mark with 64.
This spring, Wilson played mostly in center field after playing primarily first base last season. He led the Wildcats with 24 multi-hit and 14 multi-RBI games and also had a 19-game hit streak. Along with his Player of the Year nod, he earned A-10 First Team and A-10 All-Academic Team honors, and he was named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Atlantic Region Team.
