MLB Draft July 9-11

PreviousPage 6 of 11Next

Rd 11: Carson Montgomery, RHP from Florida State. Great size and a former top draft prospect out of HS in 2020. Sounds like he's got solid to plus stuff and some real talent there to possibly shape with some professional sculpting.

Padres: A Team USA pitcher with good arm talent and the potential of a plus fastball/slider combo.

I know some people who are pretty close to the Putnam's. I also know a decent number of people who were patients of his dad. Danny always seemed like a guy who deserved more of a shot than he got to me.

I've shared this before, but I was friends with Alex Dickerson from 5th or 6th grade all the way through highschool. He was unbelievably good. I still think he would have been a big time player if not for a number of devastating injuries going all the way back to highschool.

I was also friends with Wynton Bernard in middle school and overlapped for at least a year of highschool with Brett Bochy, Thomas Neal, Xavier Scruggs, Kevin Newman, Austin Wynns and Connor Joe who all made the big leagues in addition to Alex. It's actually kind of crazy that so many guys from Poway made it from that timeframe. I can't say I saw it coming for all of them. It's probably a good reminder of how much of a crapshoot scouting and development can be with guys at those ages.

Should be a fairly easy sign given last week he entered the transfer portal and was leaving FSU.

Yeh, a big time prospect coming out of HS but did not get the money to take him out of his long time commitment to FSU ... just never really worked out. Sounds a bit as though his command was the big issue.  Don't think he had any health issues. Still just 20 so it may benefit him to get some professional development over the risk of using his last season of college ... with a new college ... and not impressing. Odds he would not elevate his draft status all that much to ge the big money.

Pick 12 Blake Dickerson LHP (HS) ... this may be the guy they needed extra money to  sign. Ranked #158 by MLB.com.

Stoked on both rd 11 and 12. I hope they can nab this kid.

Rd 13: Dane Lais, 6'4 HS RHP. Sits low 90s with his FB (2300 RPM) with a low-mid 80s slider and a change. Another intriguing arm.

Padres: Young projection pitcher, up to 94 mph with strike-throwing ability and spin to his breaking ball.

Rd 14: Tyler Morgan, 6'0 SR RHP. Can't find much of anything  but he'll be a lock to sign cheap.

Padres: Power arm that sits 94-96 mph with a plus slider. … A relief prospect.

Not all that impressive stats ... so expect the scouts see maybe one pitch that they may build around as a RP.

One year ago Perfect Game had him as the #6 LH pitcher in the nation.
