MLB Draft July 9-11

PreviousPage 5 of 11Next

10th round: Nik McClaughry, nearly 24 and 5'9 with no power or speed to speak of.... eh?

Under slot for money to sign someone over slot drafted earlier?

Just a guess but Kemp is the only HS kid after the 2nd pick so maybe all those College … somewhat obscure … picks are building a pool to go over on Kemp. Would be surprise if Head or Gonzales need over slot money.

Outside chance they could be building a pot for the someone picked tomorrow with the non-pool $150,000 max … over comes from the pool. So, watch out for pick in the 11th or 12 round as legit target.

That's what I'm thinking. Teams always need guys they know will sign for minimal bonuses to balance out the guys they go over slot for. It might be even more important for us this year given how small our pool is.

I mean there's underslot, and there's this. Dude sounds like he has a slick glove, but it feels like we could have found someone with at least two or three long shot tools to sign underslot.

I mean, whatever, a 10th rounder isn't going to make or break a draft... but also we don't need to waste picks?

I mean he was the Pac 12 Defensive Player of the Year, hit .325 and was 1 walk short of a 1:1 BB to K ratio. I'm not going to pretend I knew anything about him before today, but a disciplined contact hitter with a good glove seems like an ok choice for an under slot player to me.

Add that he was one of three finalist for the Rawlings Gold Glove at SS, 2nd team All West Region, and Academic Honor Roll.

For what may be $25,000 signing … not expecting a ton of upside from anyone. At least his defense should make him a nice system player for a few years.

9th Round Pick- Ryan Wilson OF Davidson

I used to coach against him in Little League in Durham.  Unbelievable talent for his age, always played up.  Hard worker who always put in the time to get better.  Real grinder.  Hope it works out for him and the Padres.

Its always fun when you have a connection to a player from their youth days. Add the fact that he is in our system, this should be a real fun follow for you.

I grew up playing with and against a handful of guys that went on to make it to the big leagues. Knowing how good they were and seeing that they mostly just became fringe major leaguers helps me appreciate just how good some of these guys really are.

I played with Cole Hamels and was in some classes with Danny Putnam growing up. I feel like Danny was a bit more of a "professional" prospect (and absolutely dominated). Cole had his fastball and a great curve early, but wasn't as... I dunno, serious, I guess? Both were obviously notched above everyone else, though, and we've seen how their respective careers unfolded.
