Minor League Discussion

Been high on Iriarte since early 2022.  Probably slightly taller than his listed 6:02, but definitely not 160 pounds - closer to 200.  Velocity has improved with added weight/strength and shows better command overall, although still occasionally sails the ball high or wide.  Pitches out of the stretch which seemed to help him keep a straight line to the plate.  Lot of swing and miss but would even be more effective if delivery hid the ball more.  Still walking more than preferred rate but some of that is because ball moves a lot and umpires don't pick it up; seems to have overcome previous high HR rate with better location this year.  Lot to like and likely be added to 40 man for 2024 since eligible for Rule 5 draft.

We have an interview/feature coming up with Iriarte.  He's 6-foot-3, 211.

Padres minor league pitchers generally took a step back this week from previous decent outings but that is not unexpected for developing arms.  When I watch these games, I'm looking for how much swing and miss and is the pitcher generating from opposing batters; whether or not there is late movement on his pitches; how repeatable is his delivery; is there discernible difference between his FB and breaking stuff, particularly the change-up; does he pitch differently with runners on base; can he work himself out of jams with runners on; and does he have a good stride and finish well.  Most announcers/broadcasts give good information on velocity and type of pitch so that makes things a little easier to follow but I also use Fangraphs to validate what I've seen by the K-BB%, FIP, Line Drive %, and the old reliable WHIP.  It's fun to watch these young pitchers grow but also frustrating when they have batters 0-2 and give up solid hits by catching too much of the plate - much like Wolf did in his last start.  Can't wait to see Lesko based upon how Snelling, Williams, Mazur and Lowe have looked this good this early in the season - a great haul of pitching talent.

Teheran opts out again ... probably because he was not added to the 40 man when the window opened with Lugo's injury and they called up Weathers. Try his luck with a different organization.

San Antonio released INF Bell and Aviles (fringe types) leaving SA only 3 active INF. So either some INF are coming off the IL or some promotion / demotion move coming.

Brewers, Julio Teheran Agree To Major League Deal

Pretty cool.. HR with the Boss watching

By my unofficial tracking, currently have 70 players assigned to the DSL Brown roster and 6 players unofficially assigned to the DSL Gold roster. Several of these players may move up to the ACL to fill out that squad but Padres should have enough players to adequately staff both DSL teams although the quality of play may be diminished.  In the past couple of years, Padres have had strong DSL squads unlike previous years when they were lucky to get to .500.  Expect a bit of turnover in the minors as we approach mid-season and further movement after the July draft.
