Minor League Discussion

PreviousPage 224 of 356Next

4 days away from the official signing of Ethan Salas!  May take almost all of our international bonus money but WELL WORTH IT to get the #1 rated International prospect by Baseball America.

Looking at the upcoming signings and what we have in the minors, there are currently 53 pitchers listed on the rosters of the Arizona Complex League Padres (32) and the Dominican Summer League Padres (21) and that does not even include Snelling or Mazar who are not listed on these or any Low to AA roster, where there are 57 pitchers currently listed:  Lake Elsinore (17), Ft Wayne (22) and San Antonio (18).  Even with injuries that will place a certain percentage of pitchers on the extended IR that's a lot of competition for a few spots.  Hopefully, many of our high end prospects will meet expectations and a few guys who really find the key to success.  By the way, there are another 13 pitchers currently listed on the El Paso roster and that does not include Teheran.

With roster limitations of 26 (MLB), 28 at AAA and AA and 30 at Hi and Lo A, it will be interesting to see who ends up where in the system, both to start the season and by the end of the season.

57 P for LE + SA + EP + FW + Dominican + AZ seems light to me.. thats only 9 per roster.. we need 15 at AAA and AA =30.. and then 17 at LE and FtW = 34.. AZ =20 Dominican 20 = 40.. thats 90 Pitchers -57 = we are 33 light oh minus the 13 at AAA .. 20 light No?

Even with my math being wrong (13 in EP) .. seems like we still a bit light

BTW ..do u see Doersching (age) being pushed to AA.. no spec in front of him for DH/1B.. and maybe even Merrill (young) who seems to answer every challenge and lv thrown at him??

Pretty sure there are 53 just in Arizona and the DR and another 57 in A-AAA

For a total of 110

Padres would probably love to have Doersching in AA, but he would likely have to show less swing and miss in spring training to get that opening day assignment.  They recently signed Pedro Castellanos, who also can play OF and could go with another year of Yorman Rodriguez splitting time at 1b/c.  I'm guessing that there is a greater chance Cole Cummings, who is a couple of months older than Doersching and a left handed bat, gets to open the season at San Antonio rather than Doersching.  I'd pair Doersching with Carlos Luis at Fort Wayne to start the season.

For the pitchers … don’t forget a potential of maybe 13 pitchers who are on the Padres 40 man being optioned / or clear waivers and accept assignment to AAA and adding to their total … maybe pushing some down to AA but clearly leading some releases.

The minors have an abundance of “arms” … just debate who survives at what level.

Position player wise SA appears thin. Y.Rodriguez will probably float around as 1B/DH/C but would think some ST competition with Luis (who was tested at 3B along with 1B), Doersching, Cummings, and don’t forget Martorella who some think is a better hitter than Doersching (but similar profile) being in the running for 1B/DH.

Might even see Fernandez back in SA if not upped to EP … 3B/1B/C/DH with a good bat.

SA may be thinner in the middle INF unless Howell returns to the INF and Merrill just directly to AA.

Tomorrow  #1 Merrill #2 SALAS (#90 top 💯  my guess)

We are spending $5.6 million on SALAS..we have $5.825 mil total.. that leaves us $225k in Intl $$ to find some gems

Salas and King will probably split time behind the plate in the Arizona Complex League.  King, #4 draft choice in 2022 out of high school, is 2 1/2 years older than Salas but only got 9 AB's at the end of ACL season. Look for Salas to blow by many of the current catchers in the system and possibly end up in Lake Elsinore before the end of the year if he is as good as many think.  Salas will turn 17 on June 1st, which is typically the youngest age of US high school graduates.

Padres always find gems to sign on the international market, particularly pitchers.  I believe anything of 10K or less than doesn't count toward the signing bonus ceiling.  One of their better pitchers last year in the Dominican Summer League, Aldo Leija, signed for 10K, as did most of their international pitcher signings.

What are the rules (limits) on making trades to add to the international money pool?

With the potential RP trades off the current roster … maybe getting international money is a better return than a fringe prospect? Of course timing would be critical as the bulk of the better prospects will sign sooner than later given all the early handshake agreements.
