Could go either way on Merrill but if they believe he is ready for AA he will be there BUT not likely to be send back to A+ if he is struggling ... Preller does not like to put any prospect into reverse and prefers them to work through struggles where they are at.
Basically not a move to AA on a "look and see" approach but a move to AA on a firm belief that is his appropriate slot for a development challenge ... so the real challenge is on the development staff in deciding.

While our major league window is wide azz open at the moment I think AJ wants to keep our best prospects.
I get the "we've already gone for it so why not go ALL in" option....but at the same time we need guys in AA/AAA who can actually produce at the ML level also.
While we are spending at an unprecedented level right now it isn't sustainable.
Make Campy the backup Catcher/DH....keep Merrill and the few good arms we have and hope to add to them in next years draft and Int signing period.
It certainly doesn't help that we don't draft in the top half anymore but....of course we all prefer it that way.

There were many more players who were eligible to elect free agency but did not; probably given a successor minor league contract or some kind of assurance they would either be placed on the 40-man or if they are not taken in Rule 5, they would get a long look in spring training. Among those at AAA are: Hollis, Kohlwey, J Fernandez, Liberato, Belen, Leasher, Burdi and Camarena. In AA: Y Rodriguez, Ona, Guerrero, Bachar, Bencomo and Watson. At FtWayne: A Ruiz, C Luis and Espada. At LE: JLopez and Zabala.
Belen was listed by BA as a minor league free agent but I still see him on the El Paso rolls in a number of baseball rosters - all the other Padres minor league free agents listed are off the rolls.
Between the above group and the huge number of potential Rule 5 draft eligibles, it should be an interesting day today to see who makes the 40-man.

Nick Burdi P.. is a very interesting cat at El Paso for 2023... he has tremendous SO/IP numbers ..but is Wilder then Wild Turkey..

Good write up on Salas.. he is probably ready for A ball Lake Elsinore..with the "much older Competition" he has been gaming since being 12yrs old.. turning on a 97 mph fastball to the pull side at 14 yrs old..oh man I am excited about this kid...

As we head toward the Winter Baseball meetings in San Diego and the Rule 5 draft, expect Padres to pack the El Paso roster with a lot of lower level leagues prospects who are eligible for regular Rule 5 but would be exempt from the minor league phase by being on the AAA roster. From what I've seen, there are only about 15 players listed on the EP roster and even some of those are dicey. You could put guys like Iriarte, Vela, J. Lopez, Mundo, Howell, N. Cedeno, Fabian, Luis, Valenzuela, Homza, Y. Rodriguez, Bencomo, Geraldo, A. Ruiz, Komar and others in order to protect some of your better minor league performers/prospects. Should be an interesting couple of weeks ahead!

That is usually the game ... even more they could reassign some current AAA players to AA to make more room for protection from the minor league phase.
Although all teams play the same game ... usually a few players (usually decent "system players") are left exposed for the minor league phase. Given the Padres lack of INF/OF depth in the full season ranks ... could (should) see the Padres active in the minor league phase just to create a full roster. Along with that Padres will need to be active in scouring the minor league FA for re-stocking. May not be prospects but need bodies ... and hopefully good enough to create a good (winning) environment for the real prospects.

Four-seamer has gotten up to 99, while also having a high-80s to low-90s two-seamer. Tight, vertical slider and a high-70s curveball. Also has a good changeup. pic.twitter.com/scjIVZkrAS
