Minor League Discussion

The 3 position players on this list are key to the Padres' future as they are slotted to replace Pham, Hosmer and Myers in the everyday lineup.  Not only will they inject youthful talent but all have the capacity to be better pure hitters than the three they replace with high contact rates, great eye (walks almost equal to K's, probably 12%/15%) and developing power.  Probably going to lose some HRs in the short run (Pham, Hosmer and Myers likely good for around 60-65  HRs per year) by about 10-15 HRs per year but OBP/BA going to be much higher in the case of both Hosmer and Myers although both had a very good 2020.  If/when Hosmer leaves, see Nola/Cronenworth going to first base until that position is filled by an everyday player, which we don't have in the pipeline yet.  These 3 position players will help transition the Padres to a much more complete offensive team vice relying on the HR, despite us being enamored with Slam Diego.  Hopefully, we'll see continued development by Grisham and solid contributions from Cronenworth, Kim, Nola and even Profar for however long he stays with the team.  Also, expect the OF defense to improve with Pham and Myers gone.  So looking for to the next 3-5 years!  Go Padres!

He's back!  According to Baseball America, Padres signed FA RH relief pitcher Aaron Northcraft.  For those that remember that far back, he was part of the Justin Upton trade and hung around the upper minors for a couple of years before declaring free agency and signing with the Mariners.  Last seen in the Marlins system in 2019 but did play winter ball.  Nothing to get excited about but just a piece of nostalgia.

Yeh, I do remember him ... was a starter for the most part back then. Now 30.

The forever optimist in me says “he has a chance” to contribute now in a relief role given his work out of the pen in 2019. Way way down the pecking order .... but ... a RP so who knows.

A lot of the minors FA P's are depth/competition... usually end up releasing about half of them by early into the 2021 season.

But is it just me, or don't Pads need 1-2  AA/A+ type C's and OF's just to fill rosters out?

Yes, at least for some competition. They have enough “bodies” but a good number are very questionable quality for AAA/AA/A+ on a promotion with marginal results at lower levels. Pitchers seem in “normal” shape for a new season. As it stands some position players will be in way over their heads at the level they end up being assigned.

An Allen Cordoba sighting!  Playing LF for Panama in the Caribbean Series and apparently doing quite well.  Wouldn't be surprised to see him in El Paso in 2021.  Don't think he is a CF but could play the corners and, in an emergency, fill in at most positions in the INF.  Have to give him kudos from fighting back from that horrible traffic accident  a couple of years back and trying to regain his status as a possible major leaguer - still only 25.

Excellent! Have been a fan of his potential since his Rule 5 year with the ML club. Liked his swing and athletic ability. Never developed as a SS defensively after STL tried to convert him there from the OF. Agree that a corner OF slot may be his best option as a starter but given he has played SS/3B and all the OF .... his best chance to return to the ML is that super utility option if his bat continues to develop.

If he can hit and play decent OF ... there is a place for him in the next few years with the Padres. Would be a nice comeback story from his injury.

Last year I said Cordoba if still technically viewed as a prospect would be about #20 in LAST YEAR's system.  I'll keep him "there" even though so many guys above him are gone, b/c the lost year REALLY hurts a guy his age with so much missed time already.

But you're right that he may be at AAA playing all over the OF.  He would be a great "out of nowhere" story & fit for OF that is aging in the corners in 2022+

I similarly have former R5 RP Miguel Diaz about #30 as a prospect.  All about if he recovered fully from major knee surgery, which he's had "extra" time to do.  I have a feeling he's going to wind up back on roster at some point as a shuttle up/down RP with options.

After 5 games, Panama is 2-3 ... and Allen Cordoba is slashing .381/.458/.429 !!!

A 2-3 record might actually get them into 4th place and the final spot in tomorrow's semi-finals ... with final on Saturday

Yes, Panama is playing semi-final game today at 5pm ET vs DomRep ... http://www.espn.com/extra/baseball/cbws/scoreboard?date=20210205
