Minor League Discussion

It looks like a misprint on the catcher signing.  Think it was supposed to be Webster Rivas.  Rodriguez is listed as having elected FA in the California League transactions page today.  I still like Rodriguez and hope we can still re-sign him if his arm is healthy.

So NOT listed as Minors FA's, but not listed as recently (re) signed:  SP- Pedro Avila, OF/INF- Allen Cordoba, C- Webster Rivas, RP- Carlos Belen.

Love that Padres apparently only have 6 "moving on" FA's.  5 teams had over 20 listed.  But logical/smart to re-up guys you wanted to give another look last year as a "re-do", especially with the upper levels so depleted.

Aha!  Good catch.  Agree Hansel just derailed by injuries, but seems like if both sides were interested it would have happened here.

Castillo should be an interesting watch ... probably in AAA and maybe, given the depleted AAA, an emergency call-up.

Pro: he has hit in 2017-19 so appears has some bat to ball skills and is a switch-hitter.

Con: at 25 peaking in AA after passing through the Cleveland and Toronto systems and being signed as a minor league FA by SD suggests some limitations to his ML potential. Add that he has hit the IL lists frequently over the years. Not the biggest guy in the world and not much punch.

I would love to take my little grandson to Petco to watch our "new and improved" Padres but I don't want it to be the last thing I do with him.

Well said, Randy ... thank-you!  This is 100% where I'm at today ...

Glad to see my guy Omar Cruz mentioned by Sam Geaney in his interview as a guy to keep an eye on.

I know I already am.....:)

FWIW, FanGraphs Roster Resource Depth chart which basically lists the entire system from MLB down by position does NOT have any of these players listed currently.  Also don't show should be team controlled Jake Nix and Brett Kennedy.

They do show all the Padres Minors FA who BA individually listed as re-signing.

Not sure what it means.  Roster resource is pretty deep & accurate.

Don't know if it means anything but all those "not listed" players are listed on their last minor league assignment's team page roster.  For example, Avila, Belen and Rivas are all listed on the El Paso team roster.  Those that elected Free Agency are not.

Not much reported from the instructional league but the UT did say that Abrams and Hassell performed very well.  I hope we'll get more from Mad Friars, especially on some of those who we really looked forward to seeing in the minors in 2020, like Omar Cruz and Yeison Santana.

And apparently the under the radar "name to watch" is SP Reiss Knehr.  Could end up RP with the names ahead of him & move quickly
