Padres: Mason Thompson, RHP (No. 11)
The Padres moved the 6-foot-7 right-hander to relief during last year’s instructs, and he seems incredibly well-suited for the role. Thompson will throw his fastball in the upper-90s, and his power slider earns above-average grades. He used to throw a curveball and changeup in his starting days, but those likely won’t be as necessary in the bullpen. The 2016 third-rounder is now pitching in relief for Triple-A El Paso and should be an option for San Diego at some stage this summer.

Keep an eye on Mason Thompson, who got his second save of the season replacing right-hander Steven Wilson, who left the game with two outs in the ninth inning with an apparent minor injury. The 6-foot-7 Thompson has reinvented himself as a reliever and now comes in throwing nothing but high 90s smoke. There is a good chance he could be in San Diego sometime this summer.

From today's DFR ... the tone has changed/soured ...
Mason Thompson worked two full innings for the first time this year, giving up one run on a pair of hits and a walk. The Padres added the 23-year-old to the 40-man this winter rather than risk a team taking a flier on his tantalizing stuff in the Rule 5 draft. So far though, Thompson has struggled a bit in his transition to the bullpen, posting a 6.48 ERA and striking out just five over 8.1 frames.

Mason Thompson struck out two in a clean inning of work in his hometown. The big righty has whiffed seven in three innings over the last week.

June 20: RHP Mason Thompson recalled from Triple-A El Paso
With a weary bullpen, the Padres promoted Thompson ahead of Sunday's game against the Reds. A hard-throwing right-hander, Thompson, the team's third-round selection in the 2016 MLB Draft, is the Padres' No. 10 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.

Would really like to see Thompson turn into a solid 7th/8th inning guy.....or even be an option to close next year.
