Mason Thompson

I still have high hopes for Mason Thompson (and Reggie Lawson, for that matter) ... from today's Farm Report ...

RHP Mason Thompson came off of the disabled list and pitched well, allowing just one hit in four shutout innings. It was Thompson’s first outing since July 18. According to Dylan Sinn of the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette, Thompson touched 95 mph with his fastball and sat at 93-94 mph during his four innings of work. The 20-year-old starter has had ups-and-downs this season, but has flashed tantalizing stuff. His biggest obstacle going forward will be his health.

The video at the FWJG link has some good comments about Thompson, who was on the DL with a triceps strain.

From today's DFR ...

Mason Thompson made his second rehab start (in AZL), giving up three runs and allowing five runners in one inning. The hard-throwing Texan came out of spring training on fire but was shut down on April 30 with another in a series of arm injuries.

From today's DFR ...

Mason Thompson (threw his) first start for the Storm since he hit the injured list at the start of May. The big Texan threw just one inning after a three-inning relief stint earlier in the week.

From today's DFR ...

RHP Mason Thompson returned to the IL after just two outings with the Storm. The talented righty, who has been waylaid by a variety of injuries since the Padres drafted him in 2016, has managed just 27.1 bumpy innings on the year, struggling with command when he has been on the mound.

He's a reliever now ...

Biggest jump

Here are the players whose ranks changed the most from the 2020 preseason list to the 2021 preseason list:

Jump: Mason Thompson, RHP (2020: NR | 2021: 11)
Thompson’s meteoric rise is partly a product of trades that sent other prospects elsewhere. But it’s also a testament to the way he’s overcome a handful of injuries and suddenly looks like a dominant bullpen arm. The Padres drafted Thompson envisioning him as a starter, and he still owns a four-pitch mix. But he’s impressed team officials since his transition to a relief role, sitting 95-98 mph with a power slider that has become his go-to putaway offering.

Pitched an inning in releif tonight for AAA El Paso ... gave up a HR ...

Today's DFR sez ...

Mason Thompson pitched the seventh and allowed a home run to Mariners top prospect Jarred Kelenic, but did notch a strikeout in his Triple-A debut. The six-foot-seven righty has a big fastball that can touch the upper 90s. He hasn’t had success as a starter in the Padres’ system but a move to the bullpen gives him a chance to help the big league club soon, assuming he can stay healthy.

From Today's DFR: Mason Thompson earned the win in relief with a scoreless outing, needing only 11 pitches to record four outs.

From today's DFR ...

Mason Thompson logged his first professional save without allowing a baserunner in the ninth. Thompson, the Padres’ 2016 third round selection, has struggled with command and health as a pro, but his tantalizing stuff and frame earned him an addition to the 40-man roster in the offseason. While he had developed as a starter before 2021, he has made four relief appearances on the year, and is 1-for-2 in save opportunities.
