Manny Machado signs with Padres!!!!!

There is a 0% chance of "also" signing Harper... and WHO CARES!!!

I know this deal has "blowup" potential... but you don't get too many 26 year old, 6 WAR guys at your greatest position of need coming down the pike much!

I love & appreciate how hard AJ worked & Fowler & Seidler for getting on board... really curious to see the deal structure.   What I like the most is they're dealing in present realities with Hosmer, now Machado... sign the guy there NOW don't speculate on who might be a FA next year... everything could change by then.

Your lineup is 8 guys.  1 of our 8 is a stud.  Here's what I see...

Position          Offense                       Power                         Defense                                  Intangibles

1B                   Avg+                           Below Avg                    Avg+                                      Plus

2B                  Elite                             Below Avg                    Avg+                                      Good

SS                  Above Avg                   Elite                              Avg+                                      Plus

3B                 Elite                               Elite                             Avg+                                       Negative

C        Below Avg/Above Avg         Above Avg            Elite / Below Avg                       Good/Negative?                 (Hedges/Mejia)

LF                  Avg                              Avg+                           Above Avg                                 Flaky?

CF                  Avg?                          Below Avg              Above Avg / Elite                         Good

RF      Below Avg/Above Avg      Above Avg                   Avg+ / Below Avg                  Negative?/Good                  (Renfroe/Reyes)

OMG....if you want to get a great laugh go over to the White Sox forum

People over there are PISSED....not only about Machado signing with the Padres but also the fact that AJ Preller got them a second time with the first being the trade that got us Tatis Jr

Starts on page 792 and up.......get your popcorn out 🙂

What a great day to be a Padre fan !!!

Not only that.....apparently Luis Urias chose the Padres over the White Sox too.

What a great day to be a Padre fan !!!

I’ve been enjoying the WS board ever since I heard the news.

They say they only acquired Alonso and Jay to try and lure Machado.

Now they’re “stuck with them”.

lol

What a great day to be a Padre fan !!!

I saw the Ron Burbandy "go f yourself" line being used a lot.

Honestly, we can all root for him being a Padre for only five years.  If he performs like he has or better(just entering prime) he will opt out at 31 to get the last giant deal.  That means we miss his 34-36 years when performance likely starts declining and we have plenty of money for our young guys when they hit FA.

Well hello there Not!

Im happy with the opt out.

It gives Machado reason to push himself to possibly make even more money in 5 years.

If he opts out that would mean he has outperformed this $30 mil per deal.

That would be a good thing for us.

One thing we haven’t mentioned is that almost everyone in Padreland is happy about this......except Ty France.

Ty France has had a bad day.

But that also just shows even more what a huge get this was.

No team in the running for Machado had a worse situation at 3B than the Padres.

We easily took our worst position at the major league level.....AND in the minor league system, and made it a non issue for a minimum of five seasons.

What if we start the season with this configuration. France/Vosler @ 3B, Machado @ SS, Kinsler/Garcia @ 2B, and Hosmer at 1B. That gives Machado some time at SS and see how good/bad he is at SS and Tatis time in AAA, and Urias time to heal and work with Tatis in AAA, and delays the clock on both of them. Additionally, what if France is a late bloomer in the instance of a David Freese and then we have a possible trade chip at the deadline. Then when we see that Machado is clearly better at 3B, and Tatis is ready, you bring both Tatis and Urias up, and our INF is now Machado, Tatis, Urias, and Hosmer with a back up of Kinsler and Garcia.

Listening to a mass of non-SD reporters on the Machado signing ... lots of plus comments on Machado's talent it being a great signing for SD. A lot of him being a very hard worker on his game ... post up every day ... and good in the clubhouse as a teammate and with a hard nosed approach on the field. Yes, does not run some plays out but that is more the exception and given the full package ... nothing to worry about.

Related commentary has him clearly Gold Glove at 3B with one reporter suggesting some scouts have Tatis as elite defensive SS (60 rating to pushing 70). That would represent an elite left side of the INF and maybe mute the though of Machado at SS and shifting Tatis to 3B.

Also, some commentary that this should do a lot for Wil Myers rebounding to his All-Star level from a few years back with a focus off him and getting more pitches with Machado in the line-up.

Clearly at some point during 2019 the INF will settle out as Hosmer - Urias - Tatis - Machado and if Tatis looks good in ST and in the first month or so in AAA ... that could be a lot sooner than I had thought ... maybe as early as mid to late May.

Preller has no issue with bring up prospects when they are ready (not worried about service time / Super 2) but would prefer when he does call them up ... they are ready to stay for the long haul. So, in a sense it is up to Tatis to force Preller's move. I would think if Urias is healthy, the same logic and he does start in the ML. The longer the new INF can play together in 2019 and Tatis / Urias get the ML experience ... the more poised they are to move to the next level of completion in 2020.

=====

I guess there will be some debate on how to start 2019 ... the Hosmer - Kinsler - Urias - Machado configuration sort of is the early consensus but their may be a case for Machado opening at SS where he is good ... keep Urias at 2B his natural position for maximum ML development time ... and "try" Kinsler at 3B where he really has no experience but it is only for a month or so and does set him up as a useful back-up beyond just 2B (could platoon with Garcia who hits LHP well). The appeal of the first "consensus" view is that Machado, Kinsler, and Hosmer have Gold Gloves at those positions which may be a boost to the fledgling pitching staff. Not a bad problem to have.
