Luis Campusano
Quote from Randy Manese on April 18, 2025, 2:55 pmCampy won't have the OBP/BA that Arraez has but he could be more productive RBI-wise and still have an OPS of 700+ with an wRC+ of around 100, like Fenn has indicated. Campy can handle 1st base and if he grows as a catcher, he still has a chance there as a solid back-up. Don't think he'll be one of the first called up but he is coming up. Against LHP see him: Tatis, Cronenworth, Machado, Merrill, Bogaerts, Campusano.

Luis Campusano stayed hot at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of walks. In the lineup as the designated hitter, Campusano scorched a 112 mph double to center and even his out was a 109 mph grounder. Through seven contests, he’s hitting .280/.400/.480 with five walks against four strikeouts.
Luis Campusano is the perfect example of a SD 4A player of the early 2000's. Too good for AAA, and cant hang in SD and ML baseball. We should have traded him 3 years ago when he actually had value.
Paul "PMac" McAnulty! Jon Knott! Ben Johnson! Mike Baxter! Kyle Blanks! Freddy Guzman!
Also, special shout outs to Tagg Bozied and Jake Gautreau!
Ray McDavid ... Dave Staton ... tempting to put Abner and Ben Davis and even Austin Hedges on this list ... and Franmil? I'm sure there are MANY others ...
I lived in Oregon and was listening to the Portland Beavers game on the radio when Tagg Bozied blew out his knee jumping on home plate after hitting a game-winning HR ... heartbreak!!! 🙁

Quote from fenn68 on May 5, 2025, 4:48 pmWith Campusano up ... had to re-look at his defensive metrics as a catcher in 2024 to see if there is any chance he could be an option behind the plate (even for 2026) ... knowing Shildt wants a defense first catcher. Does not look promising for Campusano. Consider:
there were 34 catchers with greater than 600 innings caught in 2024 ... Campusano was:
#34 in dWAR at -7.9 (only 5 were below 0, tops were in the upper teens)
#34 in defensive runs saved at -17 (would have been worse but only caught 671 innings)
#33 in framing
#32 in blocking
#32 in throwing
So if he has a future with the Padres ... will have to be a DH but considering he is out of minor league option for next season ... maybe he is a trade chip with very limited value.

Quote from LynchMob on May 17, 2025, 3:14 pmAs a life-long Padres' fan, you know I (we 🙂 have a bottomless pit of hope ... so it is for me with Luis ... from today's DFR ...
As we have chronicled all season, it is evident that Luis Campusano has nothing left to prove offensively the PCL. Yet, he continued to prove it Friday as he doubled and connected on his tenth homer of the season while drawing a pair of walks. For the first time this season, the 26-year-old started at first base, perhaps giving him a chance to carve out a role on the big league roster. He leads the PCL with a 1.120 OPS, and his two-hit effort extended his hitting streak to six games. His power has not come with a lot of swing-and-miss; his swinging strike rate of just 5.8% is the fourth-lowest in the circuit. That has helped him punch out just 21 times while drawing 25 walks in 142 plate appearances

Quote from fenn68 on May 17, 2025, 4:14 pmYeh, his ML calling card will be his bat ... which I still have hopes for (has not been bad over his overall ML work).
He may have to wait until ST in 2026 to make his case ... with a better chance if the Padres don't sign Arraez to a new contract. Sheet (controlled / low cost) has done well in 2025 and just maybe gets more work vs LHP. Could be a platoon option with Sheets otherwise.
I mentioned this option before ... for 2025 ... considering Heyward is not producing and not really much else in the LF mix (like Lockridge but really don't project his bat to be sufficient). Sheets to LF ... he was a RF for the CWS (not good defense but want a bat in the line-up). Campusano can move up as the DH.
Will be the Padres be better with: Campusano (DH) / Sheets (LF) or Heyward (LF) / Sheets (DH) ... Lockridge is around to provide LF support be it RHH or late inning defense.
Sort of a trade off of hitting Campusano > Heyward but defense Sheets < Heyward. Plus adding a legit LF in 2026 will cost (if can be found) and Padres will want to focus the money on signing King and Arraez (both clearly loved by Preller and both like SD) while dropping back under the luxury tax threshold to avoid a second time and more severe draft pick penalties.

Quote from LynchMob on July 24, 2025, 2:04 pmI'm still hoping ... from today's DFR ...
While Luis Campusano went 0-for-4 at the plate, he was responsible for the hardest hit ball in Triple-A, and the second hardest hit ball in all of baseball on Wednesday. His 114.0 mph rocket was a thing of beauty had it not been directly where the left fielder was positioned. The erstwhile catcher still boasts a .992 OPS on the Triple-A season.

Quote from LynchMob on August 4, 2025, 11:28 amStill keeping an eye on him 🙂
Luis Campusano, who got the start behind the plate, connected on his 16th homer of the season off former Padre Carl Edwards Jr. and also drew a walk. He has now hit in seven in a row, though the 110.5 mph missile of a home run he hit was his first in nine games.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 4, 2025, 11:47 amI've been watching Padre baseball since they came on TV.
Been following the boxscores for 55 years.
I have "never" seen a kid so good in AAA and so bad in MLB.
I've seen 100's that weren't as good at this level...and many disappear quickly.....but from practically the best player in the League to the worst player in the league.
It's gotta be in his head now

What frustrates me is that he is so lost at the plate in the ML in 2025 but in the past has been able to hit in the ML (not great but effective).
At this point just amateur speculation into a player's mind ... but the repeated options to AAA along with a lot of negative about his catching defense might just have gotten to him in a negative way.
At some revisionist thinking ... but the Padres may have been better off a few years ago to stop the catching and just convert him full time to 1B and let him focus on his hitting while his bat was still somewhat productive. He has a ML line in 546 AB of 240/294/372 ... could that have improved if hitting was the development focus?

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 4, 2025, 4:46 pmDo it now.
He’s not catching again for us most likely….move him to 1b in AAA and see what happens.
Maybe it will “clear his mind”?
