Time for his own thread 🙂

Padres: James Wood (No. 3/MLB No. 90)
San Diego’s 2021 second-rounder missed all but three games in May with a right wrist injury but has been outstanding since returning to Single-A Lake Elsinore in mid-June. July has been his best stretch yet, with the outfielder batting .333/.449/.579 with two homers and 14 RBIs. Wood came within a double of the cycle to start the month. Five days later, he collected three hits and five RBIs. In his debut season last summer, Wood batted .372/.465/.535 in 26 games for the Rookie-level ACL Padres. Now through 41 with Lake Elsinore, his numbers sit at .325/.447/.563.

Wood and Ruiz are the two position players I wouldn't want to give up even in a deal for Soto.

Yup.   I would move Hassell. CJ and Gore .. before I move Wood.. look at his approach very similar to Soto.. his power potential screams Judge.  He can run like J Rod so can easily stay in CF and cover as much ground or > than anyone with them strides... with the season he is having I can see him going from #90 to top 10 by end of season... and becoming our new #1.. . MAYBE he becomes a Star maybe he doesnt. BUT he is one I'd like to see all the way through...

Plus I am enjoying watching him at LE

I want Estury to have like a 17 for 50 run these last 9 games before the deadline.. cementing CF for the rest of the season

Among all his attributes its his K/BB ratio that impresses me the most.

.442 lifetime OBP and 49 bb to 73 K's for his age is pretty impressive.

Of course his power/speed combo is pretty special as well.

Really hoping to see him in FW soon to see if it continues.

Keith Law sez ...

2022 Draft Q&A: The Athletic’s Keith Law

Right now, I think he is a Top 50 prospect in all of baseball, and to go from what I was hearing last spring – and some of the same guys that I was talking to then can’t believe what he is doing now – is a combination of how we missed and good for the kid.

From today's DFR ...

The offense was, once again, led by James Wood, who connected on his 10th homer in 50 Cal League games as part of a four-hit night. The big left-handed hitter continues to assert a claim as one of the top hitting prospects in the game, now sporting a 1.003 OPS across 81 professional games. Each of Wood’s slash line stats would rank second on the circuit if he had enough plate appearances to qualify. Thanks to his two trips to the IL to deal with a wrist injury, he’s still a week or so away from showing on the leader boards.

Keith Law has him coming in 44th in his mid-season top 60.

Nationals: James Wood, OF (No. 3/MLB No. 35)
New organization, no problem. Wood ended his Padres tenure on a bender, going 8-for-11 (.727) with a homer and six RBIs in his final three games with Single-A Lake Elsinore, and picked up four hits in his Fredericksburg debut three days after being moved in the Juan Soto trade. The 19-year-old outfielder is hitting .328/.403/.535 with two homers and four steals in 15 games with the FredNats, showing the same five-tool potential that made him such a key piece in the August blockbuster.

I really hated trading him.. BUT if we keep Soto here for a decade + it will be worth it.. not so much for 2 1/2 yrs... I think out of all the players traded Wood and Susana will be the ones that we regret the most.. BUT again if I can watch Soto play for a decade + I am ok

Could have signed Soto as a FA in 2 1/2 years and kept all the prospects. The trade did not boost the odds of him signing.

That entire trade rests on Soto’s performance leading to going deep into the playoffs (maybe a WS). Need both conditions in my mind … Soto elite AND winning.
