Quote from Brian Connelly on June 6, 2019, 9:12 amQuote from fenn68 on June 6, 2019, 4:29 amHeard that Castillo will begin a rehab assignment shortly (on the 60 day IL).
Lamet (on the 60 day IL) is already on his rehab assignment.
That could mean that in about a month the Padres will have to open 2 slots on the 40 man roster. One likely is Pirela the other one will be a question. That dilemma just makes it harder for the Padres to add a non-roster player in the short run (e.g. L.Allen). Would think Wieck, G.Reyes, Maton, Avila are in the high risk zone for DFA at that point.
I think the most likely outcome with Lamet is they wait till after the All Star Break to activate him. Castillo as a RP could move much faster and be back before end of June.
Agree Pirela is the first move. But then a month is an eternity; roster could look very different by then. Agree all RP's who have gone down at some point (above + Stock) are at DFA risk. Eventually think Warren too. Also, Loup & Kennedy if/when off 60 might just be straight DFA. "Bottom" of 40 (47) man appears safe for now though: Olivares, Guerra, Torrens, & I think Avila.
Pads COULD put Avila &/or Espinoza on MLB 60 day IL, but they would obviously accrue MLB pay & service time if they did that to open a spot/s...

Quote from fenn68 on June 6, 2019, 9:29 amAs I recall pitchers get 30 day rehabs and then have to come off the IL.
Lamet went on rehab on May 29th so will come off the last week of June BUT probably will be just optioned to the minors. He has 3 minor league options years left ... so not issue getting him the longer recovery time in the minors. Still will need a DFA from the 40 man.
Castillo clock starts when he actually goes out so in his case he could be post All-Star game and he too has minor league options left ... so they have flexibility.
Of course ... pessimist that I am ... they could re-injure themselves and end the rehabs and remain on the 60 day IL.

Lamet has 3 x 10-day extensions available since coming off TJ surgery. But correct could & may be optioned.
With less rest between appearances, and "only" building up to maybe back to back game appearances, doesn't seem like Castillo would need all that time. Sure he's been throwing pens leading up to the rehab assignment. But again, could option him if the control & command isn't sharp initially

From today's DFR ...
LHP Jose Castillo made the start, as he began his rehab assignment. The lefty reliever pitched a scoreless inning, punching out two and walking one. Castillo figures to get a few more innings before joining the bullpen in San Diego.

Quote from LynchMob on June 9, 2019, 8:50 amRight-hander Adam Warren landed on the injured list Saturday with a flexor strain in his right forearm. The Padres recalled righty Gerardo Reyes to fill his spot.
• Utility man Jose Pirela has recovered from the left oblique strain he sustained in late April. He was activated from the IL and optioned to Triple-A El Paso.
• Hedges was a late scratch on Saturday night because of a left ankle sprain. According to the team, Hedges is day to day. Austin Allen filled in and went 1-for-3 with a walk.
• Outfielder Hunter Renfroe has been battling a stiff neck for the past two days, and he's been limited to pinch-hitting duties. Renfroe's status for Sunday's starting lineup remains uncertain.

Quote from LynchMob on June 13, 2019, 8:06 amFrom today's DFR ...
Outfielder Franchy Cordero pulled up lame on his way to first base and was lifted from the game. The timing couldn’t be worse for the 24-year-old, who was due to come off the Injured List any day.
After throwing a scoreless inning Monday, RHP Javy Guerra landed back on the IL with a sore oblique. The same injury that held him back in spring training earlier.
CF Jeisson Rosario also did not appear in the game after appearing to have pulled something running out a grounder yesterday. He is still day to day.

06.13... Franchy Cordero (elbow) left a rehab game Wednesday at Triple-A El Paso due to an apparent leg injury.
Spin: Cordero was trying to beat out a grounder and wound up on the turf after crossing first base. The exact nature and severity of the injury is unknown. He was able to walk off the field under his own power but had a noticeable limp. Cordero has been on the injured list since April 7 because of a right elbow sprain, and this leg issue figures to set him back at least another week.
