Injury Updates

From today's DFR ...

Making his 11th start since coming back from Tommy John surgery, Efrain Contreras left the game after two batters in the third inning, holding his elbow as he went. The righty allowed a run in the first then needed 28 pitches to get through the second as Lansing plated another.  Contreras went out for the third inning and gave up two straight hits before being removed; both ended up scoring. Contreras needed 59 pitches to get six outs (38 strikes), and his removal was characterized as more of a precautionary move.

Myers yesterday played in CF, had 2 hits … one a HR .. for LE.

The important note is that he did play in the field … and it was CF … hmmm.

Myers was not a good CF when tried the years back BUT if the alternatives are Grisham who has regressed a lot defensively while sub-.200 bat or Ruiz a TBD commodity in 2022 … maybe Myers gets some ML time in CF.

Also, might reflect Preller’s difficulty in finding a legit CF available on the trade market and is redirecting his trade chips to other positions.

OF of Profar - Myers - Mazara? Ruiz the 4th OF?

28 3-0 0.64 28.0 34 1.07

Myers playing CF in LE last night..is a thing alright.... That would be such a HUGE upgrade over Grishman offensively....and the way Grish has been playing defensively probably there too...

I'd start Ruiz at CF in larger parks..like Petco/Coors etc..and Myers in smaller ones where he wouldn't be asked to cover as much ground... with the lack of Offense from CF throughout the league ..Myers in CF would give the Pads a huge advantage.. with 60 -65 or so games left ?by the time he returns..and pending FA a Wil Myers HOT STREAK for the season would be AWESOME!

Profar to be back no later than first game after AS break and maybe this series.

OF of Profar/Ruiz/Myers is certainly better than what we've had recently with Mazara 4th guy.

I'd like to see Azocar down to AAA when Profar activated......who goes for Myers?

Mazara or Ruiz or something done with Grisham?

Mazara is light years better than Profar and Myers at the moment... he is our best hitter since he came up

105 .314 2 17 0 .797

Profar

310 .242 8 38 4 .740

Myers

124 .234 1 19 0 .582

Myers career

3562  .253  147  499.  103. .769

AB. BA. HR  RBI  SB  OPS

Our best OF (given benefit to Myers for career #success  and taking Defense into consideration a bit..

Myers LF/Ruiz CF/Mazara RF

Profar in bench.. Grisham in bench

Our best lineup.. Profar in LF...Ruiz in CF..Mazara in RF... Myers DH

Voits career #s are so much better than his 22 numbers ..(Grishams are too but keep getting closer to this current version as he now has over 1 season ( last 162 games played 2021 and 2022, of < Mendoza line performance).. but I don't think Voit helps us anywhere close to what Myers can do..SB/Speed Defense/ 2B and HRs... Voit has a hard time scoring from 2nd on a single or 3rd on a SF.. and can't beat out a grounder that 90% of other mlbers could.. which cost us outs and DPs ..and a lot more swing and miss strike outs than Wil...

I would imagine

Profar up .. Azocar down

Myers up.. Batten down

When it gets interesting is when Tatis comes back them what ?? Need a 40 man move..AND a 26... CJ? GRISH? Down (assuming Ruiz hitting and not letting anyone knock him off the lineup)

Deadline will solve some of the 40 spots + going - coming

The most likely scenario with the return of Profar and Myers is the optioning of Azocar and Batten. In case of an emergency One of Kim or Abrams will be on the bench for INF and in case of emergency Profar, Nola, and Ruiz can go to 2B.

Since Preller and all the other GM are probably all in on the draft through the weekend … not going to see much of a short run move between organizations. However, do think if Preller stumbled on a taker for Voit (Myers gets to DH) he would make that move. To a lesser extent same goes for Grisham but as poorly as he is preforming he still provides some OF insurance in 2022 if Ruiz tanks in CF and in 2023 if the FA all go. He is at least at league minimum.

The real issue will be when Tatis returns and that timing in conjunction the trade deadline moves. IF the Padres make no moves that bridge the CBT level … could see a DFA of Voit (maybe get lucky on a waiver claim) but not sure his performance for a $5.5MM contract will get him tendered in the off-season. Non-tenders of Voit and Lamet opens up $10MM CBT for a much better FA signing or trade add.

Saw a report suggesting that Myers return may be a bit further out than I was thinking.

Apparently he is back to DH in LE and was seen limping (knee) after his CF outing (next day he did not play I think).

He is hitting (albeit in low A) so maybe at some point the DH/1B option is viable but not OF. Not coming off right after the All-Star … so a TBD that could stretch out until the trade deadline … another two weeks.

It looks like Merrill isn't the only key prospect with a hamstring injury getting back on the field tonight in Peoria. Outfielder Samuel Zavala, who's only gotten into a couple of games this season, is in the lineup as well.
