Injury Updates

PreviousPage 17 of 35Next

Based on today's update from Tingler:

  1. Lamet is targeted for a return after the All-Star break
  2. Snell "should" be ready once he is eligible to come off the IL (I am a bit fuzzy on when that actually is since this was not an "injury" but an "illness" and one reporter suggested he does not have to spend the full 10 days and could start on Sunday ... that does not even work with a the 3 day pre-date rules for injuries and don't see why that would apply). He is traveling with the club to PHIL but if it were me, I would lag him until the Padres return for the next homestead Monday given his 2021 Home/Away splits.
  3. Nola is starting baseball activities and could be back before the All-Star break (Personally activating just before the break does not seem worth it and give him the extra week to get back into full health).

I guess that sets up Weathers (Thurs) - Paddack (Fri) - Darvish (Sat) - TBD (Sun).

From today's DFR ...

The game went from bad to worse for the Missions.  Down by one, San Antonio had two on with one out in the eighth with one of the top prospects in professional at the plate.  CJ Abrams swung early in the count and grounded into a double play to end the inning.  During the next half-inning, a grounder up the middle saw Abrams collide with second baseman Eguy Rosario.  Abrams would limp off the field unable to put any weight on his left leg and there has been no further word on the severity of the injury.  Earlier in the day, Abrams and El Paso catcher Luis Campusano were selected to represent the organization in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game.

Abrams (reportedly per Missions radio voice) is day-to-day with the injury to his knee. No IL as of now. Guessing both the Missions / Padres will not rush him back

From today's DFR ...

Steven Wilson looked sharp in his first appearance since returning from an eight week stay on the IL. The 26-year-old righty allowed two hits – one of them left the yard – in two innings while striking out five.

Austin Nola (left knee sprain)
Expected return:
 Thursday
Nola missed nearly two months while on the IL with knee trouble, but the Padres expect him back in the fold on Thursday in Miami. The veteran backstop played in 11 rehab games (though he only caught three of them). He will be eased into action behind the plate, sharing time with Victor Caratini relatively evenly. (Last updated: July 21)

LHP Ryan Weathers (right ankle fracture)
Expected return: Saturday
Weathers was diagnosed with a small fracture in his right ankle, but it appears as though the injury will only keep him sidelined for less than two weeks of action. The Padres are lining Weathers up to start Saturday’s game in Miami, though he still needs to pass a couple more tests over the next two days. Weathers threw a simulated game on Wednesday. (Last updated: July 21)

RHP Dinelson Lamet (right forearm inflammation)
Expected return: August
There’s no firm timetable for Lamet’s return, but it isn’t particularly imminent. Lamet will first need to throw a couple bullpen sessions on this road trip, then he will face live hitters in a simulated game before the Padres consider activating him, possibly in early August. Manager Jayce Tingler noted the possibility that when Lamet returns he could do so in a bullpen role -- or pitching in shorter bursts as a starter -- to keep him healthy down the stretch. (Last updated: July 19)

LHP Nick Ramirez (left rotator cuff inflammation)
Expected return: TBD
Ramirez has thrown 20 1/3 innings of relief for the Padres this season. (Last updated: July 8)

Strahm pitched an inning for AAA El Paso yesterday!

Matt Strahm works a perfect inning in his second rehab outing with @epchihuahuas. 5 K's in 2 innings so far on his way back from the knee injury.

Strahm could be a wild card going into September/October.

Former starter,  veteran, lefty.....I've always been a fan. Hope he shows well with what's left of 2021.

From today's DFR ...

Luis Campusano missed his fifth straight start since exiting last Sunday’s game with a muscle strain. The 22-year-old catcher was able to come off the bench to pinch hit, flying out in his only at-bat.

RHP Taylor Williams continued his rehab assignment and fired a scoreless inning, punching out one. It was the second outing for Williams, as he makes his way back from a knee injury.

Profar to the IL (no reason which usually implies COVID related).

O'Grady up.

So that leaves Kim as our IF back up until Fernando returns?

Hope nobody else goes down tonight.
