Injury Updates

PreviousPage 15 of 35Next

I suspect they believed the lat sprain as "mild" which is usually 3 - 6 weeks and had him throwing pretty early after the injury. If they are back to square one on a mild lat strain ... fair to expect the full 3 - 6 weeks more on the IL. Note that if it gets "upgraded" to a more severe level ... we at talking months (and maybe surgery).

Report is that Nola will go on the IL .... sprained knee ... should be about 2 weeks.

So, Campusano should be the call-up ... unfortunately he is not hitting all that well in AAA. Caratini will get a lot of work.

Not Rivas just due to the 40-man aspect?

Sure sounds from the reporting that Preller is looking for other options than Campusano. Might be a minor trade for a catcher with an minor league option. I guess they could 60 IL Williams or Altavilla if needed or DFA someone like Humphreys.

Campusano is hitting near .100 so cause for looking at other options ... plus we really don’t know how Nola will be out (despite what the Padres suggested) and since this is the 2nd IL for Nola ... if they can get a serviceable veteran they can stash in AAA he is insurance for the season if Nola or Caratini go down again.

Is Rivas at AAA?

Surely that'd be the easiest way to go? Knows the pitchers ( to some degree) and the organisation.

Be cheaper to put one of the pitchers on the 60 day as well.

That would fit ... but has only caught 4 games this year (bulk going to Campusano) and may not be what the Padres want from a ML skill set.

Having said that ... good chance Rivas is the one added since finding a ML quality catcher at this point in the season with minor league options at a “fair price” is a long shot.

Says something about Campusano’s readiness ... only one month but maybe the jump from A+ to AAA even with alternate site time was a stretch and he will need the full AAA season to develop .... an issue for future injuries in 2021 to the catching position.

I don't know about having options but a couple that "might" make sense are Pedro Severino from the O's or Jacob Stallings from the Pirates.

The O's have the #1 prospect coming at Catcher in Rutschman and Severino at least gets on base pretty well and they aren't going anywhere.

Same can be said about Stallings but the Pirates don't have a top prospect to take his place but Stallings is over 30 and only been in MLB a couple years.

I doubt AJ makes this type of deal but I'd be happy with one of these two.

If anything will probably be a guy currently on someones AAA roster.

Where's Jason Castro?

Both are out of options and both are the #1 catcher for their teams for now.

Any of the options they may find that can’t be optioned might work if the plan to go with three catchers (maybe using Nola more in the INF). Of course the “cost” would be one of Mateo, Kim, or Profar would have to be dropped ...that is very unlikely.
