Well the Padres thought this may happen given the contract Kela signed:

1 year/$1.2M (2021), plus conditional option

  • signed by San Diego as a free agent 2/18/21
  • 21:$1.2M ($200,000 in minors), 22:$800,000 club option, on condition that Kela injures his arm, requires Tommy John surgery and spends more than 90 consecutive days on injured list in 2021
  • performance bonuses:

Doubt he is ready to pitch until late 2022 and although $800K is not much more than league minimum and he is effective when healthy maybe needed in Sept, 2022 ... but eats a 40 man slot over the winter.

Interesting if the Padres take the option or if they decline and then resign him to a minor league deal?

Yeah, with SO many guys in similar situations coming off TJ I doubt he's back on that deal.  Looks like it was more protection against it happening in ST.  40-man already an issue when 2022 offseason begins after playoffs before Kela...

But gives Kela a basis to shop himself to other teams for an unlikely MLB deal.  If doesn't get it, maybe he comes back on 2 year minors deal or something.

Sucks.   Just can't believe the # of TJ, though with Kela sounds like all knew it was possible.

From today's DFR ...

Starting pitcher Brett Kennedy took a liner off his leg on his first and only pitch of the game.  Kennedy, in his seventh year in the organization, is looking to put himself in the conversation for when the Padres need reinforcements to the big league rotation.  His early exit did not help his cause, with a 7.88 ERA in eight innings so far.

At least it was a leg, not his arm!  Hopefully it's nothing serious.  Depth is really thin at upper level SP

Any word on Matt Strahm?

It has been seven months since his knee surgery and (as usual) dead silence from the Padres on his recovery. Getting to the point of no return ... at least for 2021 with him having to resume baseball activities and logically a rehab period. He maybe could be "ready" in August but would the Padres want to risk inserting him into the mix during a pennant run and also have him bump someone that got them there?

Is he heading to be a non-tender candidate this winter ... only under control for 2022 and there will be nine 60 day IL types coming off that have to be addressed.

Interesting.

Amazing we have 30 wins actually.

Props to AJ for building the depth this off season and getting ahead of the curve.

Is that graph saying we've had the most missed games by our players? I guess it makes sense. We seem to have players go down A LOT!

Still, as you suggest, credit to AJ for building depth. Our team plays in the city with the nicest weather on the planet yet we have fit, professional athletes drop like flies. Gotta find a better way to keep our assets producing.

I'm not sure of the source of this ... I got it from onroto.com ...

05.25... Drew Pomeranz experienced some tightness in his left lat while facing hitters this past weekend, per Padres manager Jayce Tingler.
Spin: Pomeranz will be shut down for a week and then the Padres will reassess the situation. It sounds like it could be a relatively significant setback. The star reliever had a 1.98 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings before landing on the injured list May 9 with what was originally diagnosed as a left shoulder impingement.

From today’s pre-game presser with Tingler ... reported by both Acee and Cassavell.

Given Pomeranz’s history of injuries ...not optimistic for a quick return and if they push it might create a longer term problem. Need to do (if they can) what is best for his availability down the stretch.
