Injury Updates
Quote from Brian Connelly on April 1, 2021, 12:41 pmQuote from fenn68 on April 1, 2021, 12:20 pmAs the Padres finally set their 26 man, they (no surprise) put Baez on the 60 day IL.
Not sure the rules but they also put Guerra on the 10 day IL (no surprise as he is out of options) but they also put Ona on the 10 day IL (elbow) instead of optioning him ... he will get ML money and they (for now) save a minor league option.
Possibly two more 60 day IL candidates if they need (want) to add a non-roster player without a DFA.
Yeah, Ona hadn't appeared in a game since March 20th, so figured he must have been hurt.
I would add Altavilla, Adams, & Strahm all as conceivable 60-day IL's based on combo of their injury & relative value.
So Pads clearly have room to claim/add some system depth (see non Pads thread 3 possibles already)
So Final ST tally: Castillo, Baez, plus Jake Nix all out for season with Tommy John. (Wingenter & Clevinger previously)
Seven (!) new 10 day IL injuries: Guerra, Adams, Grisham, Nola, Johnson, Ona, Altavilla (Strahm & Lamet previously)
... need each month of the season to go a lot healthier than that!

Quote from fenn68 on April 1, 2021, 4:39 pmThink a move of any player to the 60 day IL requires the league to approve the move based on some medical evaluations. Somewhat is protection from teams game playing with the roster.
In the short run ... and hard to read where all the injuries stand but seems as though Guerra may be the first out given the elbow is the issue and zero word on him working on baseball activities.
Adams is throwing bullpens and the word is he is “near” returning. Hard to see a compelling medical case for Altavilla with a calf injury. Johnson is also throwing and is expected to return quickly.
Ona is a bit of the unknown and “may” have a case for the 60 day.
Now IF Johnson and Adams are returning in a week ... good chance Williams has to be DFA (along with Crismatt optioned) ... so a 40 man slot would open BUT past the point (probably) of any current waiver claims yet room for a FA signing potentially.

Quote from Brian Connelly on April 1, 2021, 5:40 pmYeah, I get you can't put "minor thigh bruise" guy on 60-man just to keep him... has to warrant the time.
But guessing there's SOME margin for error there. I'd be surprised if Preller weren't at least trying to get 1 guy for with Guerra to 60... in a week this wave of guys will have all settled in somewhere else in the minors.
The 40-man is likely to eventually open up a little as RP gets healthy, with 1 or more DFA's of out of options guys becoming inevitable... but I don't think you "burn" Taylor Williams 7-10 days into the season if you can option someone else instead (Crismatt, Weathers, even Tim Hill)... hold the depth until it's impossible to do so (i.e. all/most of pen at full health).
The fact that it's "built in" for 40-man spots to open up increases the likelihood of being able to keep waiver claims like Jordan Humpreys all season relative to other teams where he's sitting as that 40th man "in the hot seat".

The Padres remain optimistic that star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. will be back in the lineup for Friday night’s series opener against the Dodgers at Petco Park.
With injuries piling up for the Padres, they had to hold their breath when Wil Myers exited Tuesday’s game against the Pirates with right knee inflammation. Tingler said before Wednesday’s 5-1 loss at PNC Park that Myers was dealing with patellar tendinitis, but he was feeling better and could return to the lineup as soon as Thursday’s series finale. (He did not)
Prior to Wednesday's game, the Padres activated relievers Pierce Johnson (groin) and Dan Altavilla (right calf) from the injured list, placed right-hander Taylor Williams (right knee inflammation) on the 10-day IL and optioned right-hander Nabil Crismatt to the alternate training site.

Quote from LynchMob on April 17, 2021, 3:39 pmLots o' injury info in Dennis Lin's write up of last night's game ...
Along the way, the Padres squandered one of the gutsier performances of Manny Machado’s career. The third baseman logged three runs, two hits, two walks and two stolen bases, tweaking his left shoulder on one of those thefts. Despite that injury and some lower back tightness, he did not leave the game.
Like Tatis and, now, Machado, Pomeranz has been dealing with some shoulder trouble. Tingler described the reliever’s ailment as “tightness.” Early Saturday, following a marathon game, Machado was being examined by team medical staff. Pomeranz seemed unlikely to be available for the next game.
Dinelson Lamet, a 2020 Cy Young candidate, could debut next week. Nola is expected to see game action at San Diego’s alternate training site this weekend.

UGGH. Was holding out hope since hadn't been announced yet.
That is 4 TJ SURG so far in 2021 from Spring Training & 15 MLB games: J. Castillo, M. Baez, Jake Nix, & now Morejon
2020: Two Spring Traings + 60 games + playoffs: Wingenter, Clevinger, Reggie Lawson, Efrain Contreras (Fall instructs)
Keep in mind that at no point over that time has anything even close to the entire MLB team + Minors farm all been pitching since there was no Minors season last year.
I realize it's weird circumstances with COVID, but this is massively Alarming: Feel like Pads should do exhaustive top to bottom review: Offseason programs, arm maintenance, stretching, specialists/consultants, MRI's on "healthy" guys ... there has to be SOMEthing they as an org can be doing a little better here...
The only silver lining for Morejon is that he's so young. But he has never come remotely close to a single season of handling a SP workload.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 20, 2021, 6:00 pmAll we can do is hope these guys come back ready to go in 23’.
We will need some arms by then after all the trades and guys contracts expiring.
I'm gonna assume we re sign Musgrove but we really need Gore and Weathers to stay healthy and produce.
Also Paddack to add that 3rd pitch.
I really think we’re gonna miss Cole Wilcox in a couple years.

Joshua Mears left the game after being hit by a pitch in the 4th inning. Currently, there is no word on his status for Friday’s game.

Left-hander Drew Pomeranz played catch on Monday and Tuesday and should progress toward throwing a bullpen session on either Wednesday or Thursday. Pomeranz landed on the injured list last week with a right shoulder impingement, but Tingler indicated that he's progressing steadily. The earliest Pomeranz can be activated is for Sunday's series finale against the Mariners.
Two other relievers, meanwhile, aren't quite so near a return. Right-handers Taylor Williams (right knee inflammation) and Dan Altavilla (right elbow inflammation) are still recovering and are not approaching a rehab stint any time soon, Tingler said.
