Injury Updates

Right-handers Trey Wingenter and Ronald Bolaños have yet to pitch this spring as they battle nagging injuries. Manager Jayce Tingler indicated that Bolaños (rib soreness) is closer to a return than Wingenter (shoulder inflammation).
"Bolaños probably has a chance to get out there a little bit before Wing," Tingler said. "Wing got a small injection and has been working on strength stuff."
Both were unlikely to crack the Opening Day roster anyway. Tingler indicated that Bolaños might return to the mound for game action next week, and he should still have enough time to be built up for the start of the Minor League season.
Wingenter, on the other hand, seems likely to open the year on the injured list. He has posted a 5.14 ERA (but a 3.78 FIP) over two seasons in the Padres' bullpen.

Strahm will undergo surgery to repair the patellar tendon in his right knee, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Strahm was bothered by a knee issue for much of the 2020 season, but he's expected to be ready for spring training following his surgery. He underwent a similar surgery on his left knee in 2017.

Some other notable Padres injuries:
• Left fielder Tommy Pham had left wrist surgery and was the victim of a stab wound early in the offseason, but the Padres expect him at full strength.
• Lefty reliever Matt Strahm had surgery on his right patellar tendon, and it could be a race against the clock for him to be ready by Opening Day.
• Lefty reliever José Castillo has pitched only two-thirds of an inning over the past two seasons due to an assortment of ailments -- including a left lat strain, a left flexor strain and a left middle-finger injury. Castillo is likely to progress slowly in the spring, but the Padres believe he's fully fit.
• Right-handers Trey Wingenter and Mike Clevinger are expected to miss the season due to Tommy John surgery.

Quote from fenn68 on February 20, 2021, 10:04 amIf Strahm starts on the IL ... some decisions on the rest of the pen.
Should note that IF you look only at Strahm's history as a RP ... he is very very good (Career 2.70 ERA / .198 BAA ... 143 innings) just don't let him start.
With Strahm penciled in as the #2 LHRP ... and Castillo being worked in slowly (and some concern with minimal work since 2018) ... Hill is more likely to make the roster as the #2 LHRP.
Would that scenario make Morejon more likely to make the opening day ... even though they would like him to get stretched out? Alternately, if the are OK to start the season with Pomeranz / Hill could that preserve one of the out of option RHRP ... at least for a short spell to prove their ML quality (or not)?
Maybe some of the decision is the ability of the RHRP to get LHH out ... but really want Strahm in the mix sooner than later.

News of José Castillo's Tommy John surgery was gut-wrenching. But aside from that, the Padres' other ailments this spring have been short term. Wil Myers (right-knee soreness) and Fernando Tatis Jr. (flu) are both back in the lineup after missing time. Tommy Pham has figured out an issue with his contact lenses and is raking again.
There are some other bumps and bruises the team would love to see resolved by Opening Day. Trent Grisham is still dealing with a hamstring strain and hasn't yet worked out with the team in his recovery. Austin Nola is a question mark for Opening Day because of a fractured left middle finger. Relievers Drew Pomeranz (forearm) and Pierce Johnson (groin) are working back from injuries.

Quote from LynchMob on March 21, 2021, 3:26 pmPadres manager Jayce Tingler expressed optimism that left-hander Drew Pomeranz would return to the mound shortly. Pomeranz dealt with some left forearm tightness after a bullpen session last week, and he hasn't pitched in a game since March 9.
"He didn't feel too much when he was throwing," Tingler said. "It was a little bit the next day -- recovery and a little bit of tightness in there. He's been checked out. We feel confident as a group it is just a little bit of inflammation."
Pomeranz -- a crucially important piece as a dominant left-hander in a righty-heavy bullpen -- was evaluated further, and tests revealed no structural damage. The Padres' level of long-term concern seems low. But Tingler wouldn't fully commit to a Pomeranz return by Opening Day, citing a wait-and-see approach.
• First baseman Eric Hosmer was scratched from the lineup on Saturday because he was "feeling nauseous" with a stomach bug, Tingler said. Hosmer missed a week last season with a serious stomach ailment. But Hosmer informed team staff that he believed this bout to be unlike and unrelated to what he experienced last year.
• The Padres are still hopeful catcher Austin Nola will return from a broken left middle finger in time to be ready for Opening Day, but Tingler again expressed caution, saying, "We can't really punch the gas and make something happen."
• Left fielder Tommy Pham collided hard with the left-field wall at Peoria Stadium as he attempted to make a play on Chris Taylor's home run in the top of the fifth inning on Saturday. Tingler and a team trainer paid a visit to Pham, but he remained in the game.

Quote from WindsorUK on March 21, 2021, 3:38 pmSeeing that Anderson Espinoza was not mentioned in your previous post Lynch, I'm assuming he came out of his last assignment unscathed?
How nice would it be for that kid to catch a break?

Quote from fenn68 on March 31, 2021, 9:45 amListening to T.Gwynn Jr and he suggested that the return of Lamet may drift into May (maybe mid-May) and the return of Strahm is a real unknown since little has been heard on his injury and apparently no baseball activity .. maybe “mid-season”.

Quote from fenn68 on April 1, 2021, 12:20 pmAs the Padres finally set their 26 man, they (no surprise) put Baez on the 60 day IL.
Not sure the rules but they also put Guerra on the 10 day IL (no surprise as he is out of options) but they also put Ona on the 10 day IL (elbow) instead of optioning him ... he will get ML money and they (for now) save a minor league option.
Possibly two more 60 day IL candidates if they need (want) to add a non-roster player without a DFA.
