Houston Astros at San Diego Padres: Sept 16-18
Quote from WindsorUK on September 19, 2024, 2:20 amCorrect me if I'm wrong but it seems Cease has 5 or 6 good outings followed by a few clunkers?
If that pattern holds true going forward, we should expect to see Good Cease through the 1st round of playoffs then Bad Cease in round 2 sometime. Hopefully that clunker won't come in a deciding game. Or maybe pitching in the post season will give him more focus?
Anyway, last nights performance was awesome!
Go Pads!

Of course a lot depend where they stand in the Wild Card race down the stretch. As it stand:
OFF day
CWS: Musgrove; Perez; Darvish
OFF day
LAD: King; Cease (2 extra days rest); Musgrove (1 extra day rest)
AZ: Perez (1 extra day rest); Darvish (1 extra day rest); King (on normal rest)
OFF day
Playoffs: Cease (1 extra day rest); Musgrove (1 extra day rest); Perez (1 extra day rest) or Darvish (on normal rest)
===============
Starting the Playoffs with Cease, Musgrove seems to be ideal. However, can debate if the “extra rest” helps or hurts. No idea how Shildt / Preller view this.
No way Martin Perez starts a playoff game(s) for the Pads this year. He will be the long relief pitcher if one of the starters struggles in a particular game. It will be interesting to see what order the Pads use for their starters in the playoffs. Cease, Darvish, Musgrove, King. I'm comfortable with any of them starting a playoff game and giving us a good shot a winning any playoff game. Go Pads!
Hopefully we have some big leads and Perez can pitch some low leverage relief innings to keep everyone else fresh.
Piggy back a starter.
But,this team plays so many close games that isn't that likely

Baring some one off events … would expect the Padres go with Cease, Musgrove, and Darvish as their SP … Perez and King go to the pen as a LH and RH option who can come in early (and go long) if the game dictates.
IF they need to go with that 4th starter … might be dictated by the opponent’s line-up and whether Perez or King is hot and/or less used in the prior games. Most would think King but King (experienced RP) might be critical in relief in the games before that need for a 4th SP (if ever needed).

Quote from brent wolff on September 19, 2024, 8:01 amIt will be a very interesting decision by Schildt & Niebla (+ Preller & the analytics group) as to which who starts each game of a wild card series.
Game 1 I'm predicting Cease
Game 2 Very tough call Darvish or King (who has been arguably our best starter all year long).
Game 3 Big Game Joe Musgrove
If the Pads happen to lose Game 1, do they come back with Big Game Joe for Game 2? Then decide between Yu and King for Game 3?
As Fenn mentioned, in the wild card round King & Perez could be used out of the pen. If the Pads advance to the divisional round, then 4 starters will be needed and I have no doubt that it will be Cease, Darvish, Musgrove & King (in some order), with Perez remaining in the pen. Let's go Pads!

Quote from brent wolff on September 19, 2024, 8:11 amSome interesting tidbits from Acee today:
Manny now has 342 career HRs, tied for 105th all-time with Ron Santo & Evan Longoria (all primarily 3rd basemen).
Yesterday's shutout was the Pads 15th of the season, tied with Atlanta for the most in baseball.
In the StatCast era (since 2015) Manny hit his 38th HR with a launch angle less than 20 degrees, 2nd only to Giancarlo Stanton (who has 45) but after those two, is the retired Nelson Cruz with 24. In the 10th year of tracking this data, only 2.6 of all HR are hit with less than a 20 degree launch angle. Wow!
Let's take care of business versus the White Sox. In 2010 a tough series sweep by the Cubs knocked that squad out of winning the NL West, so we owe Chicago one. If the White Sox get sweep, they will tie the 1962 expansion Mets team with the most losses in a season ever, with 120. Go Pads!
