Houston Astros at San Diego Padres: Sept 16-18

I'm getting concerned about Suarez recent outings.  How much rope does Schildt give to Suarez?

Does Schildt go with Tanner Scott in the closer role and move Suarez to the 7th and keep Adam in the 8th.  Shildt could akso possibly move Adam to the closer role, leave Scott in the 7th and Suarez in the 8th.  What does everyone think?  Go Padres!

Think both the Padres and Profar will be motivated to get a “fair” deal done.

He will only be 32 … so a multi-year deal from the Padres could be the swaying factor (and lower the AAV) then add that not sure his FA market will be that robust.

From the Padres perspective of his production … in 1942 PA as a Padre sports an OPS+ at 112. In his 5 years with the Padres only one (2021) did he perform under 100 OPS+. So, 2024 may be his “career year” but he has been consistently above average … for the Padres. Then throw in the team chemistry factor.

From other teams view they have to consider his time outside SD:

1312 PA with TEX … OPS+ 87

578 PA with OAD … OPS+ 91

472 PA with COLO … OPS+ 77

Those non-SD stats may make the pause … at least not push up the contract offer.

Padres also have to consider they have no internal replacement who would be projected to be near his track record in SD and if they could find an equal as a FA … would cost the same or more. Padres are likely to match any outside offer to retain him.

Since he is only 32 … and seems relative healthy … could see a $30MM/3 yr deal with the third year being the kicker keeping the AAV down.

Game 1 lineup:
1. Arraez DH
2. Tatis RF
3. Profar LF
4. Machado 3B
5. Merrill CF
6. Bogaerts SS
7. Cronenworth 2B
8. Solano 1B
9. Higgy C

I would think that both Profar and SD would look for a little longer deal for a touch more money to keep the AAV down lower than the $10M. Maybe a 5 year $35M deal.

The Padres need to have the lead in every game this series going into the 9th so they won't to face former Padre Hader.

Might do the same concept with “player options” for the out years at a lower salary … that is counted in the AAV calculation as I understand it. Value to Profar if at age 35 he is worth more than $2.5MM for each of the following years … he opts out and gets it.

”Club options”, “Mutual options” are not considered since the club controls the ultimate outcome.

I can see it now…the Padres have something going in the 8th to either tie the game or take the lead and Hader refuses to pitch 4 outs…I saw enough of that selfish garbage last year and a manager that let him dictate when and what circumstances he would pitch in…I for one am SOooooo glad they are both gone. Suarez is a gamer and he takes the ball whenever and however he is needed and Mike Shildt isn’t milk toast and the players know that.

Not sure ready to panic on Suarez … partly not all that comfortable with either Scott or Adam doing better. However, might strategically shuffle their use as the game dictates.

I know many were extolling Suarez early in the season for being the anti-Hader and coming in for those 4 out saves and his FB only approach (with command) was effective. Any chance that workload early is coming home to roost now? Also, Suarez was a just pumping FB … has the league adjusted a bit and now just sits on FB … ones with a bit less command by Suarez?

Hard to do this but maybe a lesser role (fewer appearances) in the near term helps him for the playoffs. However, if they turn the role over to Scott / Adam … and they blow saves resulting in missing the playoffs … not such a good plan.

Hopefully the Padres get some blowout wins and just don’t need a closer that often.

Mets won, Dodgers beat Braves and Dbacks lost.

Padres beat the Astros winning their 4th straight game and remaining 3.5 games behind the Dodgers. The Padres pad their lead to 2.5 games over the Dbacks.

Padres starting pitching has allowed only 1 run in the last 4 games. Darvish was outstanding tonight. He had been getting better each start since his return.

Let's take game 2.

GO PADRES!
