For some reason, Campusano plays well in the minors, but not in the majors.

Hard to fully evaluate ... still only 26 ... in and out of the ML with injuries / behind other catchers (probably due to defense).

His career ML slash line is 240/294/372 in 564 AB ... somewhat below league average but better than most ML catchers (see Maldonado / Diaz). Who understands his 2025 being 0 for 21 in the ML but is that the anomaly?

Padres have no catcher behind Fermin in 2026 (unless they pick up Diaz' option). Plus lacking a DH/1B to fill out a 9 man line-up. So, as of now, would expect Campusano to get a long look in ST with no other options and since he will be out of minor league options have the edge to make the 26 man. He will be low cost ... maybe just over league minimum ($1 - 1.5MM).

He should have a window to prove his ML chops given current alternatives and I am of the belief a team needs the replacement in hand before moving a player.

He played in EP: C (52 games); DH (40 games); 1B (14 games) ... so given his offense stats he should have a good run as back-up catcher and RHH DH ... to start the season.

If they really don't like his defense ... would have given him the bulk of work in EP as a 1B/DH and C in emergency.

Still belief he deserves a shot ... with some consistent AB.

Cubs won. Padres headed to the windy city.

The only meaning to tonight's game is to try to finish with 90 wins.

That being said, perhaps it would be a good idea not to use King in tonight's game and save him for game 2 of the wild card series.

But, then who would pitch tonight?

If King pitches tonight ... he will be on normal 4 day rest for next Thursday's game 3 if necessary. If the Padres have won in 2 ... he is set-up for game 1 of the next series on Saturday. Probably a good spot for King.

Guessing the Cubs series will be Pivetta - Darvish - King (if needed). Not sure how they deal with Cease or Vasquez but expect Shildt to pull a SP early if really in trouble ... at least one could be useful as an early/long RP. Not sure their records vs the Cubs ... but Cease has been bad on the Road (1-9, 5.58 ERA) and his lack of command does not fill a RP role in a pressure situation ...  I guess he would be one I leave off for a more established RP.

Well, some combo of tonight and tomorrow we could set regulars getting "rest" and maybe tomorrow a bullpen day just to keep all the arms sharp with the day off on Monday.

Game 2 Lineup
1. Tatis RF
2. Arraez DH
3. Bogaerts SS
4. Merrill CF
5. Sheets LF
6. Iglesias 3B
7. O'Hearn 1B
8. Cronenworth 2B
9. Diaz C

King P

Bad ... Diaz leaves game with what appears to be an oblique injury ... could not complete his AB. If that is it ... obliques don't feel better quickly ... so Diaz is very likely to be left off the playoff roster (decision has to be made by Monday, I think).

Campusano is the only catching option to replace him.

Let's hope just a "twinge" and not a full oblique strain.

Matsui's command is still an issue ... making a case to be left off the playoff roster.

The Padres won and it may seem they have nothing to play for. But, that it not true. They have 3 reasons:

  1. Be the 6th team in franchise history to finish with 90 wins.
  2. Sweep the Dbacks, which they have not done since June 2022 at Petco Park.
  3. Finish on a winning note, which would give momentum going into the wild card round.
