The final series of the 2025 regular season and it is against he tough Dbacks, who are battling for a playoff spot. The Dbacks and Padres are 5-5 in the season series and split a 4-game series at Petco last July. If the Padres are going to finish with 90 wins they will have to sweep the Dbacks.

The Padres have already clinched a playoff berth and lost the NL West title to the Dodgers. But there is still a glimmer of hope they can still host the wild card round. The Padres are 2 games behind of the Cubs and hold the tiebreaker. The Padres would need only two wins if the Cubs are swept by the Cardinals this weekend or a sweep of the Dbacks if the Cubs go 1-2.

NL Leaders
Brewers(96-63)
Phillies(93-65)
Dodgers(90-69)

NL Wild Card Race
Cubs(89-70)
Padres(87-72)
Mets(81-78)

Reds(81-78)
Dbacks(80-79)

Tatis is back.

Game 1 Lineup
1. Tatis RF
2. Arraez 1B
3. Machado 3B
4. Merrill CF
5. Bogaerts SS
6. Sheets LF
7. O'Hearn DH

Darvish P

Cubs won today. A must win for the Padres.

Padres win and keep their hosting the wild card alive.

Dbacks eliminated from the post season. That leaves either the Reds or Mets for the 6th spot.

Darvish held them to 2 runs and kudos to Tatis on his grand slam.

They need to win tomorrow to stay alive.

GO PADRES!

Padres will know before they take the field on Saturday whether the game has any meaning because Cubs start play at 11:20 AM our time  It would be nice to carry home field hopes until the last day but considering all their injuries, kudos to the Padres for a great 2025 season irrespective of whether they host or go to Chicago.  GO PADRES!!

Anyone know why the Padres did not put Laureano on the IL and call-up someone to fill out the roster for these last key games?

Maybe another position player at this point is not critical but does have some value if need to manipulate players in a game or "rest" some regulars in this last series.

The Union Tribune series preview said that they added Wagner. I don't see it reported on the official transactions page though. Maybe they're holding out hope that he can make it back in less than 10 days.

Also heard Shildt say Wagner was going to be added but was not clear on when. Yeh, did not see it on the team transactions or on Fangraphs they still have Laueano WILL BE put on the IL and Wagner WILL BE added.

Opens a technical question ... does the 10 day IL requirement remain past the regular season and into the playoffs? Not sure how far back they can backdate Laureano (3 days?) and series 2 starts on a Saturday so they could (maybe) IL him now and still have him off as they set the roster for series 2. (although most speculation is that he will not be ready). Padres have made it pretty clear he will not be ready for series 1 beginning on next Tuesday. IF Laureano is still on the IL when the set series 2 rosters ... but the Padres see him ready at some point during that series ... could they include him on the roster (while on IL) and have use of him later when he comes off the 10 day?

Recalling Wagner is interesting choice. Not sure what to make of him ... he had a good short time with TOR in 2024 and OK with TOR in early 2025 ... but bad with SD. He has had some quality MiL stats but TOR was willing to deal him to the Padres for C Valenzuela (all field no hit). Is he a 4A type?

However, with Laureano (RHH)  out ... putting four LHH in the starting line-up ... Arraez, Merrill, Sheets, and O'Hearn ... adding another LHH (who did not hit in his SD time up) over Campusano (RHH) who did not hit while up but tore up AAA is curious.

I guess if they are looking PH .... the have Iglesias as the RHH option so see Wagner as the LHH option leaving Johnson (#) to come in for defense rather than PH.

Wow....MAJOR disrespect for Campusano! Dude leads the organization in HR's and doesn't get the call when one of our few RH bats goes down.

I'd expect Luis to ask for his unconditional release as soon as possible.
