Fernando Tatis, Jr
Quote from Henry Silvestre on October 20, 2022, 3:20 pmQuote from 3fingersplit on October 20, 2022, 3:10 pmPerhaps I should have qualified the question.....yes Tatis is suspended and barred from any interaction with the team until spring training ( still suspended ) and still has to serve the remainder of the 80 games and has had zero impact on this year from a positive standpoint....plenty of negative to last a lifetime....he is still on the 40 man roster. Injured is one thing but suspended is a different breed of cat altogether.
So not only Tatis but anybody on the 40 man or is there a minimum days of MLB service that would be used ?
Pomeranz and Adams come to mind....anybody that actually played or pitched this year or players that contributed to the Padres getting to the post season.....Hosmer, Voit, Abrams, Gore etc
What should the base criteria be ?
On the 40 man roster in good standing or just the 26 man roster for the playoffs ?
All those guys get rings... Tatis is not on the 40 man right now he is on the 60 day IL.. But Ruiz/Cano/Gore/Scott/Voit/Hosmer/ CJ etc all get rings

I think the bonus money is sorted by the players vote … no hard and fast rule as to who gets what if anything. Usually they give a partial share to the clubhouse staff and some other support staff.
Doubt they vote a partial just because a player was on the 40 man (or 60 day IL) … think Contreras. Same may go for those who just had a cup of coffee like Alcantara and left the organization. They internally (probably led by Stammen) set the rules. However, I would expect the likes of Voit and Hosmer will get some partial share.
Remember the money is a fixed total pot and the more shares / partial shares given the less for others … so not a great incentive to dole out shares to either players who did not contribute or, if gone, not liked.
If my memory is correct (that is iffy) a number of years ago one winning team did not give a share (or partial share) to some of the lesser paid support staff and got really roasted for that. Don’t recall anyone being up in arms about players get screwed if they were not around at the end and were only on the active roster for a token fill.

Quote from fenn68 on October 20, 2022, 5:24 pmAs for the rings … they are created for/by the organization and are given to a ton of people at the discretion of ownership in consultation with usually the key players.
The announcers will (should) get rings, front office types (e.g. Hoffman), training staff, some scouts (especially the ML scouts) … the POTENTIAL list is limitless (except the rings usually are really expensive) … but no “rules” just discretion of those making the decision (not the same mix as sharing the players’ bonus pool).
There have been cases when “fans” (usually those mega fans for decades) have gotten rings. (I will be waiting for mine in the mail). Basically the custom of granting rings is much more liberal than players giving out their bonus money.
I would expect Tatis gets a ring but not money.

Quote from MrPadre19 on October 21, 2022, 6:11 amI wouldn’t give him a ring.
They probably will…but he messed up several times…all by himself.
He “earned” this.
I realize he’s probably already learned his lesson…I’m expecting a model Citizen and a careful one going forward….but I think not getting a ring will cement it in his mind that he totally screwed up and needs to do better.
Let’s just hope this becomes a topic of discussion in a couple weeks!

Just staying in the “wait and see” on Tatis. We would all hope he comes back more mature with more focus on his career but with the same excitement he brings to the game.
However, at both ends of the economic spectrum, many don’t learn from the mistakes and remain the same character. With a guaranteed contract over $300MM and 23 years of developing his personality / attitude … becoming a new man to fit the desires of the fans / ownership just may not resonate with him.
Again … wait and see while hoping for the best result.

Quote from 84padres on October 21, 2022, 8:01 amIF they get to this decision I hope they would give him a ring so that every time he looks at it he realizes that they won it without him and that it would fuel him to be a better person and teammate . Everyone is replaceable .

Quote from MrPadre19 on October 23, 2022, 6:16 amPossibly an unpopular thought but what if we put Tatis at 1b for 2023?
Solves that position for now….keeps him from diving and running into walls.
Any chance (10%) that this is a possibility?
Does it depend on whether we can sign Bell/Myers at a good number?
Does Drury factor in to 1b?

Interesting thought but unlikely … would expect they would want to utilize Tatis’ speed and arm to the max and easier to find a less athletic option for 1B than for OF.
Not sure that playing 1B would reduce Tatis’ injury risk all that much … still will have (or want) to dive for ground balls but maybe the bigger risk is stretching for throws. Did he not hit the DL after a major stretch receiving a throw at 2B a couple of seasons back?
The medical staff will have to weigh in on the decision coupled with Tatis’ injury history.
2019 hit IL for left hamstring then a stress reaction in his lower back (think that had him on the 60 day). Add the left shoulder (glove side) and the surgically repaired left wrist. Would worry that both the impact of receiving throws (on the wrist) and the stretching for errant throws (on the shoulder, hamstring, back) on an every game basis may be a bigger risk for injury than the OF … maybe more than SS.
———————————-
Given his injury history (frequent and varied … and remember he missed the last part of this AA season in 2018 due to injury too) … what are the odds he again hits the 60 day IL in 2023 (or multiple 10 day IL)? Do the Padres have to somehow protect against that possibility with a strong bench piece no matter where he is positioned?
One other worry … after a year off and two major surgeries on the left wrist and the left shoulder … will his hitting return to form at the beginning of the season. No sure the impact on strength and shoulder / wrist mobility.
