Fernando Tatis, Jr

PreviousPage 24 of 44Next

I mentioned a while back based on the Sept schedules we probably needed a 6-8 game lead on the Reds going into September.

Obviously that isn't gonna happen.

Without coming off doom and gloom I just don't see us getting the Wild Card now.

So.....PLEASE.....Tatis....start hitting again and run away with the MVP.

Last year he had it in the bag until he went into a two week slump at the same time Freeman got hot.

PLEASE....don't do it again.

If we miss the playoffs he needs to be the clear cut winner or someone else(Freeman/Turner/Muncy) will get it instead.

It might be a consolation prize to have a 22 year old MVP with Padres on his chest but I'd take it!

I'm with you!

He's clearly not only the best player in the NL but definitely our most valuable player( we've played horrible since he went down with that last shoulder injury).

He needs to start running again as well. He can't lose the SB crown now!

As he goes, we go.

I don't want him running ... I don't want him to try to wear the SB crown ... seems too risky ... with no real return ...

When Fernando runs, it seems to make everyone else want to do it as well.

We've only had 1 or 2 SB's during this woeful run. Everyone seems to be tense, not playing loose, afraid to make mistakes, trying not to lose.

If Tatis plays loose, it's contagious.

Heard T Gwynn, Jr. today and said that Tatis came out and said:

  1. He wants to play SS
  2. He DOES NOT want to get surgery on the shoulder

That may put the Padres in a tricky position if that does not line up with their wishes. A happy player is a productive player and if that player has a 14 year contract at mega dollars ... want him as happy and productive as possible.

If they go with his wishes .... that may move Cronenworth back to 2B and could spell a non-tender for Frazier who should get about $5MM in arbitration. Or if by some chance they actually move Hosmer ... maybe Croney to 1B. Either way if Tatis is not in the OF, Pham is gone, and the DH arrives .... Preller may be forced to pursue an OF/DH bat or two plus that situation may accelerate the arrival of Abrams in the OF.

I am back to liking Tatis at SS ... yes, not a good statistical fielder but does not look all that good in the OF, probably more injury risk at SS but his "energy" to ignite the team is at SS not in the OF.

Can't really argue against him not getting the surgery ... his body ... and considering Bellinger had the surgery after his MVP season and is really struggling and saying he has not fully regained his form ... that has go to weigh heavily on the call.

Bellinger had the surgery after the 2020 World Series.  He was not good the 2nd half of his MVP 2019 season (had an insane first half) and was bad last year prior to needing the surgery and now terrible this year.  Not saying the surgery hasn't been a possible factor, just not as cut and dry as surgery = bad

Agree that cannot create a cause - effect correlation between Bellinger’s surgery and performance … but that is us. Also, can’t predict success (or effect) of a surgery on Tatis … not all surgeries fix issues while coming with risk.

I guess in this case all that matters is what Tatis believes is his best course of action … and “as of now” it is no surgery.

Should note that Tatis has backed off a bit on the no surgery by adding “as of now” leaving room for a change.

If he doesn’t get going the MVP will most definitely go to Votto or Harper.

I hope this late season swoon doesn’t become a pattern….

Don’t rule out Muncy for MVP …. Tatis’ slump (along with the Padres fade) probably has already cost him the MVP.

No clear cause of Tatis’ slump (such as it is) but he has gone for a dominate Apr-May- June to a bit of a fade in July (.845 OPS … still good but not great). August - September have remained down (again not bad but not up to earlier results):

Aug: 228/323/579 (902)

Sep: 250/400/417 (817)

A lot of players would love those stats … Tatis’ slump is still better than most players.

The July numbers somewhat dispels the cause being the most recent IL stint (July 31 - Aug 15) or his move to the OF when he returned in August.

Time will tell.

Tatis should be an interesting subject in the winter:

1. Will he have shoulder surgery (and when)?

2. If he does, will that impact his swing?

3. Will the Padres commit to him SS (what he wants) or OF or keep him confused? Consider any impact for the departure of Dave Cameron.
