Fernando Tatis, Jr
Quote from MrPadre19 on June 4, 2021, 3:00 pmThat’s the danger of making deals when you are in “win now” mode.
It’s quite possible 3-4 years from now we are on the other side of this situation considering all the teenagers we traded to get Snell,Musgrove and Darvish.
And that’s OK....we came to the time where improving the major league team was the right thing to do even if we may end up losing some really good players who to this point no one had ever even heard of.

Quote from Stergios on June 4, 2021, 3:41 pmYou can argue that three of those deals are not looking good right now: the ones for Snell, Clevinger and Nola. And they may get a lot worse before all is said and done. That said, I think you’re right that we can’t really fault Preller for those moves. None of them seemed bad when they were made.

Quote from fenn68 on August 2, 2021, 3:08 pmTime to talk about the elephant in the room ... the health of Tatis.
Most seem to think that Tatis will have surgery at the end of the season (if not sooner). Surgery recovery time can very a lot but could be up to 4 months ... so end of season surgery could have him back for spring training.
Unknown is that if Tatis returns in 2021 ... could another occurrence make the problem worse?
So, the debate becomes whether surgery now is better for Tatis and his healthy return for 2022 or makes little difference. Padres are in a playoff run and Tatis is the best player (when healthy) ... willing to make the run without Tatis? Can Cronenworth - Frazier - Kim provide enough for SS/2B the rest of the way out?

Quote from WindsorUK on August 2, 2021, 4:03 pmI'm still thinking he's back next week.
He's young, strong, stubborn. Subluxation isn't really a major problem( if it were, he'd have not been playing this season)
Get it tightened up over the winter and he'll be back strong for next years ST.
If our starters don't get their act together, this season is down the tubes, regardless of what happens with Fernandito.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 6, 2021, 6:13 amObviously the most important thing is getting Tatis back on the field but in regards to his MVP race and his persnal stats he really has caught a break during this il stint.
The closest to him in the HR chase are Acuna(out for season),Schwarber(traded to AL) .
The only one I feel he needs to worry about is Alonso and Freeman and they are both still 7 back.
As far as stolen bases it's a similar situation Marte was closest and he was traded to the AL and Trea Turner has also been hurt.
I do think this one will end up being Turner in the end but I'm still holding out hope FTJ can get both of these to be the first to do it in a loooong time.
Again...just getting back on the field is what really matters but as a long time Padre fan it would be nice to see one of our guys do something special.

Quote from fenn68 on August 9, 2021, 6:27 pmMost speculation is that Tatis will return in a couple of days … he has been taking swings in the back cage for a couple of days and today took live batting practice this afternoon. Past couple of days seen running around the OF to keep his legs in condition.
=====
Take speculation for what it is worth … but many are suggesting we may see him return to some OF duty. Noted that on some national feeds but most of the commentary discounted that it would be to prevent further injury. Also, most think he has the athletic ability to be a gold glove OF (clearly already has the bat). His SS defense is usually spectacular but grades out overall poor. But do you do the move in the middle of a pennant chase?
Sounds as though he would be fine with the move … at least from his past comments.
Padres have a tough call …in a pennant run and need the 8 best position players on the field … best NOW regardless of the past. The current INF of Machado - Cronenworth - Frazier - Hosmer has been very productive over the past 30 days. The weak link is in the OF … and specifically Pham who has once again gone ice cold plus Profar is IL and Marisnick is just not a hitter.
Tatis will play either in the OF (likely bumping Pham) or INF (likely bumping Frazier). Note after seeing Frazier in LF … not a great LF option. Since right now see Frazier’s value > Pham’s … are the Padres boxed into using Tatis in the OF?

Quote from WindsorUK on August 10, 2021, 4:14 amI'm a bit confused... do we not have the reigning gold glove CF currently patrolling CF at Petco?
And do we not have a well below average LF currently patrolling the left corner of Petco?
Seems the obvious place for him to be is.....LF?

That was my first thought … don’t move either Grisham or Myers at this point in the season. However, getting a lot of input that CF is the EASIEST OF position to quickly adapt to (and Tatis has the athletic ability for any OF position). So is overall OF defense better with Tatis in LF / Grisham in CF or visa versa? I usually go with moving only one player vs. two (at least for now).
A lot of other dominoes will fall by next season, Pham will be gone via FA but everyone else should be back, so would not be surprised to see Grisham in LF and Tatis in CF for 2022.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 10, 2021, 12:00 pmCertainly something to think about for 2022, but my guess is that Tatis will have his surgery in the off-season and prepare for an eventual return to shortstop. He's always been an infielder, primarily ss, throughout his baseball life and thrives on being in on the action while playing next to Manny. I think that is his mindset (although I believe he would go to the OF if he had to) and I believe the organization still sees him as their shortstop for the next 5-6 years.
In looking to the next year or two, we'll have potentially two vacancies in the OF. I can see Abrams and Hassell out there or, more likely, we trade for an OF prospect to get some power into the system. If we go with Abrams and Hassell then the team becomes more speed and OBP but we'll need the pitching to keep us in most games. I think that's the reason Preller was after Gallo and I certainly concur with the alleged non-trade rumor of Hosmer and Hassell for a rental of Rizzo since that would have narrowed our options despite a respite from Hosmer's contract. Trade of Rizzo to the Cubs for Cashner was a huge mistake (preferring to keep Yonder Alonso as their 1b man of the future) and I'm glad we didn't double-down and make another one. That prior trade was pre-Preller. My guess is that we deal one of our SP, who is heading to FA at the deadline, for that OF.
