Esteury Ruiz

At this point we have to assume Ruiz is our 2023 starting Leftfielder even if Profar doesn’t opt out……right?

Profar as position flexibility and he and Kim basically have the entire field covered off the bench.

Considering both Profar and Kim have been playing every day this season(and having success) having both of them coming off the bench next year would be amazing for this teams depth.

The question then becomes what do we do with Abrams?

Well if I was Bo Mel and I had that deck of cards..

Assuming both Hosmer 3/39 and Profar 2/18 *24 an option at $10 as well opt in

I would start Ruiz LF/Grish CF/TATIS Jr RF... Tatis needs to stay healthy and SS beats him up... CJ starts at SS.

With that said  . I still use Profar 2x in LF with Ruiz getting some CF time. and some DH time for Profar as well.  Keep Tatis happy by playing SS 1-2x a week when CJ has off day..or Crone plays 1B.. Kim covers 3B/2B and SS 3x's a week 1 x each.  Keeping everyone fresh... a Huge upgrade over Alcantara 's role now... and Azocar's role..if Ruiz struggles he becomes a more used version of Azocar..

OBVIOUSLY if Grish is OPS .600 by the end of this year.  PROFAR/Ruiz/Tatis is my OF and Grish is my 4th OFer.. u can replace Tatis with CJ in RF if we think that's better... Ideally Hos opts out.. Crone/Tatis/CJ and Machado play the INF... Then Rooker/Mazara(resign if he continues to play well) and Beaty cover some options..or we bring Gallo at a 3/30 type deal

Profar continues to OPS like this he comes back as the LF.. just saying.. Ruiz vs Grish for CF in ST.. loser fights for RF/or 4th OF

As of right now if ST 23 was tomorrow and Profar opt out..and we didn't sign anyone

Ruiz LF

Grish/Abrams/Tatis CF

Tatis/Abrams/Rooker RF

Abrams/Tatis SS

Would be how I play them in the Spring to find out the right mix

If Ruiz is playing a good defensive CF in EP … and Grisham continues to be sub-200 offensively … I could see Ruiz taking the CF slot in 2023. Profar remains in LF where he is arguably in the MLB top 5 in WAR … plus offensively and defensively.

As for Abrams … probably the maximum in flexibility of position depending on the other roster composition. He probably has enough arm to be in RF (if they don’t re-sign Mazara or Myers) … he could step in at 2B if Cronenworth goes to 1B (Hosmer opts out) … he could be the SS (if Tatis is injured again) … he could be “everywhere” as the super sub … he could be in CF if Ruiz does not hit or can’t field in center.

My guess is that over the winter the opt outs will set the table for use of Abrams and then ST will solidify the decision but do think they would prefer to keep in focused on the INF as insurance (better than Kim) in case of new Tatis injuries. Even if a “super sub” he still should get a lot of playing time.

I doubt Padres will try Tatis in the OF … beyond Tatis not wanting to play the OF … the few times I saw him out there in 2021 he was BAD (I know scouts say he COULD be great … but he is not). Ran bad routes, did not understand cut-offs, and really seemed bored. Not the optimum place to learn while in playoff contention.

Tatis will be injured playing the INF, OF, on the bases, or on motorcycles … so doubt position makes a major difference.

Although not a great defensive SS … spectacular yes but inconsistent … his presence at SS, the excitement he brings, both elevates the team and the fans … he would be under utilized lost in the OF. Give a little defense but gain team energy.

So, back to my original question … how good is Ruiz defensively in CF?

At worst Ruiz + Abrams are HUGE upgrades over Azocar and Alcantara in 2023... with the DH... and BoMel (virtually a different lineup everyday) plenty of ABs for all 13 position players if they are producing.. I mean we are seeing it at C right now .. Alfaro is our starter currently and Nola the baxkup..backup...

BTW the C we got from Brewers for Carantini is smashing and C everyday with Campusano only DHing and playing 1/3 of the time at C... one would think it would be the other way around.... hmmm Sullivan os his name...

Martin - the dude that had video game #s in Mexican League is also Smashing the ball since arriving in El Paso....

From what I've read he is already average there and has only been playing exclusively this year.. he wasn't very good on the infield... He is still a little rough around the edges but scouts think with his speed and athleticism he can be at least above average at CF or Left.. he does have a decent arm, but not great for RF....

I swear everytime I see video on this kid I think Rickey Henderson... .280/.400/.440.. type 15-20 Bombs 80 SB (for now days amazing) 100+ runs.... My only fear is AJP dangles him to go get Reynolds (selling high buying at 25% off) and we get to see him do great things in Pitsburgh

5 vs AZ

4 vs LAD

2 vs Mariners

4 vs San Fran

4 vs Colorado

19 games til All Star game

Grisham ailing .. do we retro his IL and place him in it.. call up and add to 40 Estury Ruiz CF...cant imagine the rookie doing any worse and we always have Azocar just in case to play CF ....sort of keep Azocar in his role as #4 OF/RF platoon vs lefties... and get an audition for CF for Ruiz...

BTW  12-7 between now and AS break would be awesome...

Ruiz has started to "cool down" in El Paso after a blistering start there.  Drop in slugging % can be attributed to 11% increase in ground ball rate from SA, losing an equal amount from Line Drive % and Fly Ball %.  Moreover, he's had a lot of infield pop-ups since joining EP.  It could be he's just a little bit tired or maybe he's regressing to a newly established norm but in the games I've watched he definitely is not driving the ball with impact like he did in San Antonio.  Needs to remember what made him successful at SA and carry that forward.  If he can do, that and do it soon, likely will be added to the roster sooner than later.  If not, likely a late season add since Padres don't want to lose him to free agency.

He is in Colorado...Taxi squad with Morejon as well..

Expect Morejon to be added as soon as possible - Ruiz there for emergency only and maybe to pump him up to keep his very good season going for the eventual add to the 40.
