Now #7 at mlb.com ...

Biggest jump/fall
Here are the players whose ranks changed the most from the 2019 preseason list to the 2020 preseason list.

Jump: Eguy Rosario, INF (2021: 18 | 2022: 8) -- Bumped up to Double-A, Rosario slashed .281/.360/.455 and hit a career-high 12 homers over 114 games last season. The infielder then continued to impress in the Arizona Fall League, showing the ability to use the entire field. Rosario is also a versatile defender, capable of playing all over the infield with a plus arm.

And now I know how to pronounce his name 🙂

And ... love how fast the sound guy got the ESPN jingle in there!

From today's DFR ...

Shortstop Eguy Rosario had a pair of hits, including his 15th homer of the year. Rosario has already surpassed his career-high in homers and is a good bet to reach 20 homers this year, assuming he stays in Triple-A the rest of the season. It’s easy to dismiss Rosario’s power surge as a byproduct of the Pacific Coast League but he continues to improve as a hitter. His walk rate is the highest of his career and his strikeout rate is 21% which is more than passable. He is still just 22 years old.

Maybe we should keep a closer eye on Rosario’s potential for the Padres or as a trade chip. He really seems to fly under the radar although on some rankings he sits Top 10 … even Top 5 Padre prospect.

Hard to believe he is still only 22 and is in AAA … still really developing. Looked at his current season:

209/277/341 (Apr)

268/381/354 (May)

288/368/625 (Jun)

356/427/557 (Jul)

That is great progression … and remember only 22. Yes, it is PCL and yes, it is skewed a bit toward great stats at home … but more than enough there for real optimism.

Padres have deployed him at 2B (42 games), SS (32 games), 3B (18 games).

Floor is looking to be a very useful utility guy in the ML .. and maybe more. If the Padres see that … and with the current ML INF cluster of talent … might he be making Abrams an even more expendable trade chip or creating a solid reserve INF to allow Kim to start at SS and slide Tatis to the OF?

Young, versatile, low cost, long control … and producing … what is not to like for his ML future?

If we need Crone zone to close Soto deal ..(assuming CJ goes too).. could see Rosario up ..and 2B become a committee type position Profar/Happ?/Batten/Rosario type position til we address it in offseason or one of the guys claims it

In a playoff push … too soon to “rely” on Rosario, Batten, or Abrams.

More likely if Croney got moved … we see Soto in RF and Tatis at SS with Kim at 2B.

Hard to gauge the plus / minus of such a deal as it impacts the playoff run. Basically Soto in / Kim in … Croney / Mazara out (lost playing time to Soto). Not an issue with Soto’s talent … just the short run incremental impact with all the related moves.

Is that 2022 incremental change worth all the supporting prospects in the deal?

Yeah, Kim works out more as a 2B than a SS, at least in my eyes.

As much as I like Crone( and I really do!), I'd much rather move him than a Hassell or Woods.

One (of many) hitches in this scenario is timing. Trade deadline Aug 2 and if Cronenworth and Abrams are in a deal for Soto BUT Tatis is not returning until mid to late August .... how are those 2-3 weeks bridged in the middle INF ... Kim and ????

If the Padres were not in a tight playoff run ... OK ... but when every win/loss is critical that could be a problem that Soto's bat (and benching Mazara) may not cover.

I don't see Preller moving Cronenworth. Trading for Soto is a win now move and if the Padres want to win now they need Crone. As valuable as he is to us he is less valuable than Abrams is to the Nats. They aren't competing this year and want players with maximum control. They would rather have Hassell and Wood too.
