Crochet shuts down the Padres on 1 hit in 4 IP and is removed on 52 pitches. What kind of manager does that?

Once again Musgrove was outstanding. His next start is game 3 against the Dodgers in L.A.

They have been limiting him to 4 innings for a few months now. They wanted to keep him in the rotation and let him finish the season, but they also want to manage his workload. He's had a huge jump in innings and they have no reason to push it.

Crochet has put a self imposed limit of 60 pitches on himself regardless of how many innings it takes...this guy is a real piece of work...he would not report to a new team if traded unless he had a new contract that reflects the value he placed on himself...reports were he wanted 6 years and 200 million and no team was going to trade for him mid season and give up the prospects for a guy that thinks he is calling the shots...classic case of the "Tail wagging the Dog". I hope the White Sox have to either keep him...Reinsdorf isn't going to pay this guy anything until he absolutely has to or they do trade him but get nothing of value in return...he has two years left of arbitration before he becomes a free agent for the 2027 season.

Shildt didn't seem as committed to Suarez after tonight's game as he did after the past few bad outings. He at least acknowledged that they have "3 good guys" and said they'll continue to take a look at it. He also said that he thinks that Suarez needs to mix something else in to right handed batters. He specifically mentioned the changeup. He did say that his concern with Suarez wasn't very high. It wouldn't be the first time a change has been made shortly after a manager publicly expressed confidence. There's not much time left in the regular season for Suarez to get back on track. A shakeup could be coming.

The fact that they are still running him out as a SP given his innings pitched surprises me. He is at 142 innings … last year 24 (ML/MiL) left shoulder injury …2023 missed entire season with left elbow surgery … 2022 was his big season with 54 innings as a RP.

I guess running him out there showcases his health and improves his trade value …..without undo risk of a new injury.

From a player management standpoint it is the previous manager who got fired mid-season that should be criticized … taking a RP who has pitched little and has an injury history … then just worked him to death over the first few months of the season risking Crochet’s health and value for the CWS … especially on a team going nowhere.

Few are sympathetic to Crochet and his comments at the trade deadline but I can see his (and his agent’s) perspective … at 25 with potentially a long career ahead of him already at that time double his innings peak coming off a couple years of injuries has to worry that a move to a contender who will want to use him even more intensely for the rest of the season will result in another injury … maybe career at risk while on a year to year league minimu contact. Doubt they want to do any favors for the CWS at the risk of his future. It is a business for him too not just the team.

Crochet public comments about limiting his innings unless a significant new contract is what torpedoed his trade value at the deadline, otherwise he would have fetched a major haul and may do so this offseason if the CWS make him available.  I agree with Fenn's comments about limiting his usage for the remainder of the season due to him coming back from TJ surgery and him already smashing his previous ML innings was a business decision for him and his agent.  That said, he was dominant last night.  I wouldn't mind AJ persuing him this offseason.

Did you know that the Pads started the season only 12-17 (.414) versus non-winning teams (playing less than .500 baseball) and have since gone 31-9 (.775) since.  So for the entire season that makes 43-26 or a .623 winning percentage.  I'll take that.

Against teams winning teams, the Pads are 45-40, a .529 winning percentage.  In the NL only the Dog-ers, Phils, Braves & Brewers have winning records against winning teams and the Braves are likely missing the playoffs.

Most impressively, we are 45-30 on the road, a .600 winning percentage.  Only the NYY have played better on the road in MLB, going 48-31, .608.

Most disappointedly, we are only 43-36 at Petco, a .544 winning percentage.  The best the Pads can do if they finish with a sweep of the CWS is 45-36, a .556 winning percentage.

One more stat that is very interesting, is that the Pads continue to lead MLB in BA with 2 strikes batting .205.  The next closest team are the Snakes hitting .196.

Let's go Pads, finish the sweep of the CWS!

I did a little more digging about our home records since Petco Park opened in 2004.  This is the 21st season at Petco and in only 3 seasons have the Pads ever won more than 45 games at Petco Park, 2005 (46-35), 2007 (47-34), & 2014 (48-33, our best season at Petco).  We also went 45-36 in the 2010, 2013, & 2021 seasons.  Interestingly, our record at Petco for the 2022 & 2023 seasons was 44-37.

It should be noted that in the Covid year of 2020, with no fans in attendance, the Pads went 21-11 at Petco, a .656 winning percentage, so that is our best year at Petco if using winning percentage as the criteria.

At the Murph/Qualcomm, the best home record was in 1998, when the Pads went 54-27 a .667 winning percentage!  The next two top seasons were in 1978 the Pads went 50-31 at home, a .617 winning percentge.  Those were the only 2, 50 win seasons at home.  In 1984 the Pads went 48-33, a .593 winning percentage. Overall, the Pads had 18 winning seasons out of their 35 years at the Murph/Qualcomm.

Amazingly, the Padres first winning season on the road was not until the 1984 season (44-37)!  The only other Padres teams with winning records on the road during the Murph/Qualcomm era were:  1989 (43-38), 1991 (42-39), 1996 (46-35), 1998 (44-37), & 2001 (44-37).  That is it, only 6 winning road seasons in 35 years.

This year's team will set the record for most road wins in the Petco Park era, as the Pads have already equalled the 45 win total of the 2004, 2006, 2010 & 2022 teams (all went 45-36).  Again, it should be noted that in the Covid year of 2020, the Pads went 16-12 on the road, a .571 winning percentage.  Only this year's team can possibly have a higher winning percentage than 2020, by winning only 2 of the remaining 6 road games.  That said, we are all hoping for more than 2 road wins next week, hopefully 6!  Go Pads!
