CF 2020

I like the Cameron Maybin idea even more now.  Don't just need a platooner, need a Defensive replacement to protect leads.  I realize he's not the Maybin from Pads days defensively, but might be a good fit as 5th OF.

In-house, do think all 3 guys (all RH) sitting in AAA have merits:

  1.  Olivares:   I've thought for awhile that he was destined to replace Margot on roster as a cheaper RH CF capable platoon option... but next year.  Probably better if he develops & plays more CF in AAA; at least 1/2 season?  But a strong enough camp could definitely win him the spot.
  2. Gettys:  When Margot was terrible first 1/2 last year, I & others speculated "analytically" about the possibility of Getty's superior Power & Arm tools & similar/"close" speed & defense tools being "close enough" to Margot to make up for Gettys' terrible hit tool... not THAT big of a gap to close relative to what Margot did vs RHP.... but realistically he's not going to come close to Margot's production vs LHP.   He was significantly better vs LHP in PCL:  .260 / .342 / .535 in 127 AB; but that probably < averages for the juiced ball band box league!  His hit tool / contact rate is so poor he would probably have to be lifted even from games he started vs LHP when the starter is removed!  HOWEVER, he would instantly be, by far, the best defensive CF AND RF on the Padres... on a team trying to >.500 that just lost their only true & best defensive RF & now CF (Jankowski too), he does check a lot of boxes.  Band aid for a half season till Olivares?
  3. Almonte:  Primary selling points are simply MLB experience, versatility, and being a switch-hitter.  But way less dynamic /upside than the other 2.

Not sure what Maybin is holding out for contract wise ... would have thought a number of teams would have signed him if he was being "reasonable". He does seem as the best Padre option if they want to contend from the start of the season ... some defense and a RH PH (if not starting) .... maybe the only one ... if France is platooning with Hosmer.

Maybe by late in the season ... Oliveras is one to consider but a jump for a hitter from AA (unless you are "elite" like Tatis) is a big gamble for a contender to take. Maybe that is how Almonte sneaks in for the start of the season ... just veteran presence with some versatility for the bench ... a place holder.

As for Gettys ... Padres need some offensive support more than a defensive specialist who probably would be lucky to hit .150 in the ML. Remember Hedges killed it in the PCL ... Gettys' numbers are probably near the bottom of PCL players with any amount of playing time.

Side: did hear (Morosi I think) that TB has been trying for "years" to pry Margot away for SD ... they really love his upside. TB is pretty good in player evaluations.

Makes me worry ... since they dealt the under performing Archer to PITT for then under performing Glasnow and Meadows ... they were right / Pitt was wrong. So Margot?

Saw Cassavell's write-up where he suggests that we should pencil in Cordero as the starting CF (assuming he stays healthy).

A bit surprised he was that definitive. Would have expected after the trade, Grisham would be the leader in speculation or at least co-favorite.

IF that is the case and Cordero is the starting CF ... has never shown the ability to hit LHP. So, even more rationale to get a RHH option for platoon purposes ... or at least insurance.

I guess moving Myers to CF works there ... but only LHH remaining for RF ... not sure the plus in that.

Any one know how many LH Starters we faced last season?

I'm thinking Myers in CF just for these games may be OK....sharing RF against RH starters with Naylor?

Can Naylor handle RF?

If not....is he just PH/DH/1B

Let Naylor play everyday in AAA until next year when he (possibly) can take the full time DH spot (that should have belonged to Franmil). Right now he's got no place in a playoff-caliber outfield.

In 2019 Myers and Naylor were about equal vs. RHP (wRC+) ... but Myers has a better history against RHP. Myers (hard to say this) is better than Naylor defensively in RF. Could Naylor improve ... sure but IF the Padres want to get out of the blocks winning and contending ... not the time to experiment in the ML with Naylor in RF. Add that Myers is way better vs. LHP.

Given this roster .... I would put Naylor in AAA ... start full time Myers in RF ... and roll the dice with the winner of Cordero - Grisham in CF. Then sign Maybin for back-up / insurance.

If Myers is still on the roster, and in good health, he HAS to be the everyday RF. Otherwise, it'll be more of the same BS that we endured with Green( in and out of the line up, up and down the order)

There has to be a million different options in CF before this organization would even contemplate Myers in CF again.

No, he can NOT handle RF, CF, or LF!

You are right, Naylor has no place on the ML team in SD in 2020. He needs to spend time in AAA, learning how to hit for power in a game.
