The Padres return home for 3 games to face the tough Red Sox while the Dodgers are battling out with the tough Blue Jays. IMO, I think the Blue Jays are tougher than the Red Sox. The Padres, who are 2 games behind the Dodgers and could end this series in first place. Both of these games could be World Series previews

King will be on the mound Saturday and it will be good to have him back. I have more confident in King than Sears. Laureano, O'Hearn, Fermin, and Miller are definitely upgrades and have made a huge difference in the outcomes.

Top NL West games: Dodgers(66-49) host Blue Jays(68-48)

GO PADRES!

Very much looking forward to this 3 game home stand with the Red Sox.  Will be at the Saturday game among the 44,000+ and hope that King comes back with a solid game - not expecting King in his prime, but at least keep us in the game until we pull ahead and hand it over to the bullpen to close it out.  GO PADRES!

Ouch!

Buehler absolutely OWNS these guys!

Didn't help that Pivetta looked overwhelmed facing his old teammates.

Fernando looked horrible in his 8th inning AB. Kid still doesn't appear to be enjoying himself????

Tomorrow is another day!

Pivetta did not have it tonight and Reynolds looked terrible. The offense had opportunities and did not get it done.

Padres drop to 3 games behid the Dodgers. They need to win tomorrow.

GO PADRES!

We had an error, a HBP, a WP and 6 out of the 8 walks came around to score. It's hard to win when you give the other team that much help.

Listened to a discussion by Padres fans that defended how Tatis is playing ... extolling his improved "eye" at the plate and as a result taking the walks because pitchers fear him and are not giving him good pitches to hit. A good thing for a lead-off hitter. Also, use his YTD stats to suggest he is not that far off his career numbers.

I am not as supportive at this point. Admittedly I don't expect him to be at his 2021 performance level (which earn him a super-star contact) but at least close on a consistent basis. I do accept that 2021 may never be achieved again ... noticeably below every year since but 2025 (specifically the last 2+ months) are concerning. Padres need offensive impact from a super-star ... and getting a lot of walks in the lead-off position is not that in my view. Side: his strikeouts are down a bit ... but only a little bit ... so that improved "eye" may not be a real thing and more just the pitchers approach.

Consider since June 1 (58 games, > 1/3 of the season) ... 4 HR / 17 RBI.  About a 12 HR / 54 RBI pace from your super-star? The much maligned offense from Cronenworth could do that with a similar OBP.

Can debate whether the power outage is a result of Tatis being more focused on getting on base (taking walks) or something more problematic. Bottom line not getting what you are paying for or "expected" from your dynamic lead-off hitter.

Although Shildt not likely to do this ... but have to consider whether  dropping Tatis down in the batting order might snap him out of his current funk and restore his SLG ... and create more impact for the team offense. Side: still early on with the new bottom of the order providing more runners on base for Tatis resulting in more impact from him ... so for, no.

I'm baffled about Laureano hitting 7th ...

Yeh, Shildt seems committed to the picket fence of R-L-R .... line-up. I guess he could also think Laureano will get up with men on base in that spot given the new long line-up and still generate runs ... get on base ahead of now more productive hitters in the 8th/9th slots. Note that both Machado and Bogaerts have been very productive over the last month or so ... so might not want to mess with their success with over tinkering.

Tying this to my previous post ... would Laureano be more of an asset in the lead-off spot while he is hot and Tatis is cold than leaving Tatis lead-off and Laureano 7th? Tatis has a sightly better OBP but lacks punch while Laureano is hitting those extra base hits ... better RBI opportunity for Arraez / Machado? Would batting Tatis 7th (given his current production) hurt by not generating RBI while hitting behind Merrill - Bogaerts - O'Hearn who are getting on base?

Not a clear call when given this long line-up and a slumping Tatis. Any move will (should) create a plus and a minus ... the net????? How much does Shildt gamble with a move when the team is winning?

I would add to the above line-up comments ... the Padres are not only winning but have really improved offensively since the All-Star break. Shildt effect and how he has managed the line-up? Only 7 of the games post All-Star reflect the new line-up (out of 20).

Pre-All Star: 13th in runs scored (NL only) and 9th in wRC+ (at a below average 97). Note that less productive in runs than the wRC+ would suggest.

Post-All Star: 3rd in runs scored and 3rd in wRC+ (up to an above average 115).

Does that end result actually support Shildt's line-up approach and negate any idea of moving Laureano and Tatis around?
