I think Tatis is about to get rolling again. He's been making a lot of hard contact recently. He's had 7 balls with an EV over 100 go for outs in his last 4 games. With better luck he could go on a tear. No concerns at all about Machado. Arraez can be frustrating, but he's been much better overall in the 2nd half. I have some concerns with Merrill. I think pitchers have figured out that they don't need to throw him strikes to get him out. The fact that Merrill might be the weakest link in the lineup at the moment really highlights just how deep it is now though.

Their histories suggest they will get back on hot streaks at some point ... it is that "at some point" and the fact that it is four key players that makes me nervous.
Would have expected slumps but getting all four simultaneously was (is) unexpected. Hope was always that if one or two slumps (which is normal) the others carry the day and cover for them.
Now the Padres are in a good position for the playoffs ... so have some leeway to weather the storm and let the four bounce back.

The Padres take the series from the Red Sox. The finish the weekend back to two games behind.
Cease was outstanding today.
Now, the Pads head to Frisco.

He was….and if Bogey doesn’t boot that textbook DP ground ball he would have only had 1 earned.
On that subject….why was Ceased tagged with 2 earned with the obvious error allowing them to score?
1 would have scored even if not booted..but not both?

1 would have scored even if not booted..but not both?
The error occurred with the bases loaded and no outs. Two runners scored ... the first earned (would have scored even without the error) and then the second end up on hold depending on the rest of the inning. Since Abreu singled as the next batter the assumption would be that the second runner who scored would have scored from 3B on that hit ... scorer then switch to an ER.
It would have stayed an unearned run if there were two out when Abreu came up ... he then only batted because the error allowed him to hit in that inning.
