From the federal standpoint, they can get him for racketeering( RICO).

I was thinking deportation as well. This is going to get a great deal worse before it gets better. Feds don't give a shit who you are.

Will be interesting to see if the FEDS coordinate with the State of California … my understanding is that the CA version of RICO may be even more inclusive in defining guilt … although not an expert.

Basically as I understand, the FED RICO does need some level of ongoing activity and more direct involvement. However, CA can pursue on activities of shorter timeframes and without the person prosecuted being directly involved. Not “easy” mind you … but maybe more encompassing.

Looks as though the FED are well into nailing the bookie organization … appears that the “friend” with the evidence reported and his comments is in a bad place. As the facts get uncovered … good chance more of Ohtani’s “team” will get dragged in as the wire fraud and cover-up cases build.

Actually the actually betting … from a FED standpoint … is the least of the problem since the betters are not big targets while the bookies are. The crossover to wire fraud and embezzlement and the cover up is what takes this to a big FED deal.

Once the Feds get done (probably telling MLB to keep out of this at this point) … then MLB does whatever they see fit.

Side: been some comment on Ohtani and his interpreter just joking it up on the bench after the first interview … both seemed indifferent to the situation … are they clueless on the issue or just believing they are untouchable? Maybe a bit of both?

Ohtani can be shielded by the LAD from the media / fans (and they are) … will be interesting to see the approach by the media once the season starts and Ohtani / LAD return to the spotlight. Guessing LA will still be behind Ohtani (because he is good) and much of the non-LA media / fans will go on the attack.

It will be a sad day for baseball if/when Ohtani can’t play baseball for an extended period of time. The money going directly from Ohtani’s account has to be the nail in the coffin, IMO. To say you didn’t know where at least $4.5 million was going and that you were helping a friend is complete bullshit. It’s not like it was a couple hundred or even a couple thousand dollars (even that’s a lot of money). He has to get at minimum aiding and abetting which i believe the punishment is the same for the person that did the actual crime

I'm with you, Dusty. Be sad that he can't play but multiple wire transfers is going to get him.

Another big signing for an NL West rival.

I’d be willing to bet(not with his money) that he gets off free.  To much money for everyone to make for him to be punished.

Didnt see this one coming, DBacks take it up a notch. The NL West just got tougher.

SD is going to have to play their arses off this season to make the playoffs.

Alfaro and Voigt both unemployed.

Alfaro and Voigt both unemployed.

Both have had less than useful runs since they left SD.

Alfaro left after 2022 as a FA ... 2023 was a rollercoaster ride as he had a string of minor league contracts ... some calls to ML rosters followed by quick departures. Boston to COL to Boston (again) to MIA to Cubs who just realized him again. Apparently nt impressing anyone anymore.

Voit left in the Soto trade to WASH ... 2023 signed by MILW ... DFA ...  signed by METS ... released.

Will be interesting to see if they land anywhere as the move through their 30s.

Not that we have any room for him, just been a fan of his speed and stolen bases. NYY have acquired Berti from MIA.

Will Smith extended for 10/140. On the surface it feels crazy that a) a catcher would get a 10 year contract, and b) a catcher as good as Smith is only getting 14m a season... but this feels more like a 6/140 contract with extra years tacked on to limit the cap hit. Another contract that sorta feels like the Dodgers are getting away with something.
