Around the League...non Padres

Saw the note that STL is playing a two game set in TOR. Apparently Goldschmidt and Arenado are not vaccinated and can’t enter Canada. Also the back-up catcher is also in the same category. Add that one of the Cuban RP has an expired passport and is seeking “emergency” renewal (hope the official is not a TOR fan … or a fan of any of the other WC contenders).

With the 10 banned from KC … not really an issue for KC but gave an advantage to TOR. However, with STL … still an advantage for TOR’s WC run … but now hurts STL chances for their WC run. Has to frustrate STL owners and teammates if STL loses a playoff slot by one game if they lose two in TOR.

Both of these KC and STL issues hit the headlines … not really aware of other teams having the issue … maybe just not reported if not a high profile player or only one or two marginal guys.

Two days of lost pay will not impact the highly paid Goldschmidt and Arenado.

It's hard to believe this is still a thing.

It's been proven over and over that being vaccinated doesn't keep you from being infected and it doesn't keep you from spreading.

It only helps you and your symptoms (allegedly...no way to be certain).

Why Canada is still banning people from entering is beyond me.

But in this case it works in the Padres favor so whatever.....I wonder how many Padres wouldn't be able to travel up North?

Red Sox definetely selling down 5-0 after 1/2 an inning...what a disaster in Boston

Clearly ... not sure how the bottom fell out so dramatically ... losing is one thing getting massacred daily is something more.

Past couple of years the media as fawned over Cora as the manager ... BOST is a tough town ... will he be the scapegoat?

Chaim Boom is the Chief Baseball Officer responsible for assembling most of this team ... will he be the scapegoat?

Can't see the owners being happy with this collapse and have to react ... especially with NYY firmly in command and TB always there (low budget) and TOR a rising young team ... even BALT is suddenly a riser. Can BOST ever even consider going into a multi-year rebuild with their fan base?

The Red Sox remind me of the Angels a little.

Very good lineup....just can't pitch.

How these teams haven't figured out you need elite pitching to win is beyond me.

At least the Halos drafted 100% pitchers in last years draft.

Not really a good line-up ... a handful of stars in Devers, Bogarts, Story, and Martinez then the line-up basically falls off the cliff (see their OF/1B production). Maybe a cautionary tale of going heavy with stars over building a complete roster?

Also, they took a lot of risk on pitchers with questionable injury pasts .... and paid big money. Sale, Eovoldi, Paxton are more injury than production. Maybe a cautionary tale of going heavy with injury gambles for big money?

GM should learn ... but they will not pushed by the need to win ASAP and gamble on big names based on their pasts.

Duelling "personal choices" ... players choice not to get vaccinated v Canada's personal choice to not accept non-vaccinated. BOTH sides have their logic ... BOTH sides should accept the consequences.

Would love to hear the logic on Canada's end?

Never like to see great players have their career put in jeopardy with injury, but looking as though that may be the fate for Mike Trout.

Apparently he has been diagnosed with a rare back condition that appears to be an on-going problem for the rest of his career … maybe still can play but likely reducing his productivity (and maybe a lot of IL time).

Trout is only 30 and has 8 years to go on his mega-deal … about $37MM / year. Going to be a long term financial drag for LAA.

————————————

Side: LAA through various GM (but same owner) have really been unlucky on giving long term big money contracts … Hamilton, Pujols, Rendon, and maybe now Trout along with some others. Not getting what they hoped they would get out of them.

Maybe a cautionary tale for GM about being too willing to go that long term / big money route unless really confident in the player’s skill, health and the team’s near term chances of success.

Doesn't it seem likely that Padres have pushed their luck too far with Tatis?  The data so far suggests as much, imo ...

New York Post on Aaron Judge ...

Only Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard reached the 200-homer milestone faster, getting there in 658 games, compared to Judge’s 671.

Asked the importance of the milestone, Judge said, “just so I can get past it. I feel like big numbers are tough to get past.”

The homer Saturday, Judge’s ninth in nine games, was a two-run laser to right off right-hander Jonathan Heasley, who, like the rest of the Royals, was overmatched.

It also put him on pace for 67 homers, which would break the franchise and American League mark of 61, set by Roger Maris in 1961.

and a FA after the season at age 30 ... might be some teams that will try to sign him for BIG money.

Would not say NYY are a lock ... Judge is from near Stockton ... and SF will have a lot of money to add a super star headliner ... LAD will have a lot of money to add a super star headliner ... SD not so much. He should push the all time biggest contract this FA season.

With Otani a FA after 2023 and Soto a FA after 2024 ... we are going to see some unbelievable contracts awarded. Wonder it any teams choose not to go all in on Judge this winter and save some dry powder for Otani / Soto down the road.

Judge may not have too much completion as a mega FA given his profile.

The only other MAJOR FA who will command large deals are three SS (Bogaerts, Trey Turner,  and to a lesser degree Dansby Swanson) and a pitcher Carlos Rondon.

Want a real impact bat ... want mega fan appeal and marketing opportunities ... Judge is the only choice.

On a day of fun and excitement for us SD fans, it is sad to learn that all of baseball will now mourn the passing of broadcasting great, Vin Scully.

Truly the greatest to undertake the broadcasting profession, he was a true professional and a gentleman that will be missed by all.
