Around the League...non Padres

Gonna be a pinch hitter?
Now does my idea seem crazy...
Hope the naysayers are right & he really is done, but per Han Solo... "I've got a bad feeling about this".
Least disruptive to his family to stay in L.A. Joining an elite team provides some "cover" for reduced playing time. Dave Roberts has been around the block with superstars every year; sure they've probably been pretty upfront with him what to expect.
With an umlimited bank account, makes sense the Duds pick him up.
And you're probably right Brian, he'll make the difference somewhere down the line. I just hope it's not against us.....

Since they don’t have to pay anything more than the pro-rated league minimum ... money not a factor ... he had cleared waivers and the LAA are on the hook for his contract.
Well, it looks as though this is a timely move by LAD .... Corey Seager goes to the IL with a broken hand yesterday. LAD will have to shuffle their INF (note Rios is also on the IL). Probably Muncy will move off 1B to 2B ... creating a starting opportunity for Pujols.
The way I see it .... minus Seager / plus Pujols ... advantage Padres.

Quote from 84padres on May 16, 2021, 7:29 amThe Duds also traded for Yoshi Tsutsugo from Tampa. He has been hitting .167 this year after .187 last year. For Tampa it was a very expensive mistake , 2 years 12 million . If Tsutsugo and Pujols turn it around then there is something fishy going on is La La Land.

Quote from WindsorUK on May 16, 2021, 8:21 amOh, there's definitely something fishy going on in LA! Never has a team taken so many reclamation projects and turned them into productive players.
Something definitely in the water in Chavez Ravine!

Quote from WindsorUK on May 16, 2021, 1:04 pmGood article Lynch!
For those who haven't read it, this is Tailon's take.
When I got into pro ball, it wasn't just the Pirates, weighted balls were super frowned upon. Everyone was supposed to throw the exact same way," Taillon said. "No one was allowed to long toss.
MLB has been in the wilderness when it comes to pitchers arm health. You strengthen muscles by using them, loading them, extending them, contracting them. I think when contracts started getting stupid, so did their philosophy. Didn't want to destroy their huge investments as opposed to considering developing their young athletes( tantamount to buying a ferrari and leaving it parked in your garage!)
Mike Marshall had the right idea. Hell, Warren Spahn use to show up at camp without picking up a baseball all winter, throw long toss until he couldn't move his arm. He pitched, what 20+ years?
Players want to be faster, they run. Hitters want to get better, they take cuts in the cage, off the tee, wherever. Want to be a better fielder? Take more groundballs! Be a better pitcher.....don't use your arm!!!! Major disconnect.

Quote from fenn68 on May 16, 2021, 3:57 pmCan’t really use the comparison with hitters and fielders ... they don’t put the same stress level on ligaments, etc. with fielding or batting practice.
As comparing to pitchers 50-70 years ago a couple of issues ... no one ever remembers the legion of pitchers that got burned out and faded into oblivion and only remember the successful survivors. Add that pitchers at that time generally knew how to actually pitch with FB sitting maybe 90MPH and a much lower use of power breaking balls. Today the pitchers are big body guys with power arms that have no idea where the pitches are going .... building up stress pitches on the arm where the ligaments have not had development with the body mass. (Actually a similar issue with the bigger stronger faster football payers with knee ligaments).
Now the MLB stats junkies seem to think that having pitchers go 100% out of the gate and jump to the pen actually is the formula for the TEAM to have a better outcome ... not sure they care about SP going deep for the benefit of the pitcher (note we can disagree with that thinking).
I guess in Taillon’s case, if the thinks his not going deep is because of the team protecting its investment ... maybe he should reject any long term guaranteed deal and any major money? Alternatively, maybe he needs to pitch more effectively to earn the right to go deeper?
Frankly coming for the oft injured Tallion ... (elbow, flexor tendon, TJ surgery) ... hard buy his view.

An underrated part of Ohtani's game is his speed, as he currently ranks as the 17th-fastest player in the Majors, according to baseballsavant's sprint speed metric. He's just a tick behind speedsters such as Mike Trout and Acuña and just ahead of Jose Altuve and Fernando Tatis Jr. His average sprint speed is 29.1 feet per second, and the Major League average is 27. Trea Turner leads the Majors at 30.8 feet per second.

Quote from Brian Connelly on May 20, 2021, 4:54 pmAcquired from the Padres as part of last summer’s Austin Nola trade, Luis Torrens showed some offensive promise down the stretch last season. He’s gotten off to a terrible start to 2021, though, hitting .178/.219/.300 over 96 plate appearances. Torrens has also had a rough go defensively. He’s thrown out just two of 21 attempted base stealers, rated as a below-average pitch framer (per Statcast) and been behind the plate for a lofty 14 wild pitches in just 190 2/3 innings (although, to his credit, he hasn’t been charged with a passed ball). The Mariners surely hope Torrens can regain his footing on both sides of the ball in Tacoma.
Wow. That trade I really questioned is looking better by the day given Trammell's debut & now this... they just Optioned Torrens down & claimed a C Jacob Nottingham (can't be optioned) off Waivers from Brewers
