A comment from BA ... https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/mason-thompson-shows-off-at-instructs/

Righthander Anderson Espinoza, on the comeback from a second Tommy John surgery, progressed to pitching largely in one- and two-inning stints at instructional league. Once ranked as high as No. 19 on the Top 100 Prospects list, the 22-year-old Espinoza hasn’t pitched since 2016.

UT mentioned that Espinoza looks healthy and ready for ST, although they haphaardly said that a guy who hadnt pitched above High A would be competing for a rotation spot.

All that matters is that he is healthy and if he can come to ST and show what he can do, it would be another huge boost for the Padres.

Right-hander Anderson Espinoza threw a bullpen session on Friday, as he continues his recovery from a pair of Tommy John surgeries that have kept him out of Minor League game action since 2016. Then the Padres' top-ranked prospect, Espinoza currently sits No. 13 in the system and is surely headed for a future bullpen role. But the Padres are still optimistic he can make an impact.

"The ball's coming out well, it's good velocity, and yesterday, he did a good job landing his secondary pitches for strikes," Tingler said. "Yeah, we're excited for him, and hopeful we keep going forward, making steps, keep progressing on the health side."

As expected, he made his ST debut yesterday ...

A good IP!  A good "next step" in his come back!  Hopeful for 2021 ... and beyond!

From today's DFR ...

RHP Anderson Espinoza will make his first start in five years Thursday for the TinCaps.  Expect him to work on a strict pitch count as the Padres try to work him back in.

RHP Anderson Espinoza was scratched from a start this week with Fort Wayne for an unspecified reason, but was expect to resume throwing again Friday. He was not expected to require a stint on the injured list. Espinoza hasn’t pitched since throwing two shutout innings on May 6

Any updates? I sure hope it's not his elbow........

From today's DFR ...

Anderson Espinoza, working on four days rest for the first time this year, wasn’t especially sharp. The righty still showed easy mid-90s velocity, but missed with location and seemed to be fighting for feel on his change-up. The righty gave up a monster homer to the Indians top prospect Brayan Rocchio as part of a three-run third inning. In both of his starts during the series, he looked gassed as he approached 50 pitches.

From recent DFR ...

Anderson Espinoza had another so-so day in the opener and now sports a 7.88 ERA in 16 innings on the year. Right now, the main goal is to get him used to regularly throwing after a five-year layoff and build up his stamina to go past the fifty pitch mark, which he has struggled with.

As long as Anderson can get through the season healthy, I think the organisation will be quite happy.

He can improve his pitching next year.

From a recent DFR ...

The major storyline of the contest was the ejection of Anderson Espinoza after just one inning. After allowing an earned run while striking out the side, a foreign substance was determined to be in Espinoza’s glove and he was promptly sent to an early exit.
