ACL Padres 9, ACL Mariners 3
Key Statistics: LF Juan Murillo 3-3, 3 RBI, SB; RF Jake Perez 2-4, 3 RBI; DH Gilberto Vizcarra 0-1, 2 BB; SS Victor Acosta 1-4, BB; C Colton Bender 1-2 BB; RHP Miguel Rondon 4.2 IP, 4 H 3 R (2 E), 2 BB, 4 K; RHP Evan Sweeting (W, 2-0) 2.1, 2 H, R, 3 K
Prospect Watch: There are always exciting things going on in the sun-baked environs of the Arizona desert in the ACL, and one of them is Juan Murillo, 19, who the Padres have been putting in the outfield. The Cuban native was seen as a sleeper by Baseball America’s Ben Badler and is considered a plus-plus runner with some pop. He has a .415/.455/.561 slash line in 17 games and 44 plate appearances.

Really think a couple of these OFers and Acosta are legit top 💯 potential prospects down the line.. Susana from the P side as well..hopefully he doesn't get too much bigger to whereas it affects his mechanics greatly...

Quote from Randy Manese on July 10, 2022, 9:18 amAs I reported in the Minor League Discussion topic, two of the top three signees were assigned and were doing well. The carryovers from last year who we all wanted to see have had issues. Montesino (OF/1b) is out for the year with injury (ACL); Zavala likewise has been injured and has only played in 2 games so far; Acosta had a very slow start but now is hitting the ball consistently and with power. Verdugo, as expected has had his batting stats plunge as his BABIP went down below .400, however, he's got his BB rate to over 10%; his K rate is still over 30%. Murillo has looked solid although drawing only 1 walk in 44 plate appearances but his K rate is under 16%. Salinas has flashed some skills but is in the same category as a young hitter as Verdugo, low BB rate (6%) and high K rate (36%).
Team, overall has some good talent on the offensive side with Beltre and Jake Perez two others that bear watching. Beyond Susana, there is hope for Henry Baez, Saba (coming back from injury) and possibly Sweeting or Yeatman; other top pitchers are out injured. Hitting will carry this team until the draft arms come into play. Expect a lot of current pitchers on this team to be released. unless they are worth demoting to the DSL.

Prospect Watch: The Arizona Complex League got underway a day before the affiliated clubs, and the Padres fielded a lineup that showcased a good amount of talent, especially considering the 2022 draft class has yet to report. Jarlin Susana continues to earn consideration as one of the top prospects in the desert, tossing 11 outs’ worth of scoreless baseball. Susana, a 6-foot-6 righty who is barely four months removed from his 18th birthday, has now struck out 36 in 25.1 innings while walking 10. … Fellow January 2022 signee Juan Murillo hit his second home run of the season. Murillo, who was listed as a shortstop/outfielder by some outlets when he signed, has made all of his defensive appearances in the outfield, where he’s hit .328 with the two homers and 11 RBI in 61 at-bats in the Complex League. … Samuel Zavala returned to the lineup for only his third game of action this summer. After a strong showing in extended spring training, the 2021 signee from Venezuela has been waylaid by hamstring issues this summer. Zavala, who turned 18 last week, slashed .297/.400/.487 in 195 at-bats in the Dominican Summer League last year. He saw three plate appearances Thursday before being pulled for a pinch hitter. … 2021 first-round pick Jackson Merrill‘s second go at a rehab assignment commenced after the shortstop’s first pass at returning from a broken wrist was shut down by his own hamstring injury. Merrill had two hitless at-bats against rehabbing big leaguer Dane Dunning before following the Padres’ standard return-to-play protocols and exiting the game. Merrill will no doubt be champing at the bit to get back to action in Lake Elsinore, where the 19 year-old is slashing .393/.452/.518 in 56 at-bats this season.
