Going to be interesting the approach with the “pool pitching prospects” in relationship to an expanded AFL / winter instructs. No real idea how much they are being worked in the “pool” but if it becomes a steady dose of work for a couple of months ... maybe they don’t get that workload in the fall (maybe more for the other prospects not in the pool). Then ST starts in March for them. I guess a player by player decision but young arms ... a line between over working and development that is hard to define.
The “bats” should not be the same issue.
Frankly would like to see some of the next tier prospects get some reps in before next season for enhanced evaluation and 2021 placement. Might have impact on winter trades and/or readiness for a 2021 call-up early in the season. Maybe some bats (e.g. Córdoba) or some RP (e.g. Wilson).

If I have the count right ... still at 39 with Rosenthal in and Olivares out.
2+ days for some more trade deadline roster tinkering and an open slot.

As expected, Rosenthal activated and Baez optioned to the alternate site.
Also, Padres released Mejias-Breen from the alternate site.

Padres added to the alternate site (Aug 26th) ... Steve Wilson (26) RHRP who pitched for LE and EP last season. 8th round pick in 2018.

Is on the Padres’ website ... think the “transactions” or “non-roster” tab.

Now it's time to "reload", or maybe more accurately, "backfill" the 60-man pool.
In addition to Jorge Ona & Anderson Espinoza (TJ Rehab), 2 more obvious candidates now are Michael Gettys & Ivan Castillo to take the places of traded prospects as "deep depth". I'd like to see team controlled Jake Nix too; maybe start converting to pen.

Anyone have an idea as to when the “alternate site” shuts down? Only 3 more weeks in the regular season. Playoff teams will carry a five player traveling taxi squad beyond the 28 man active roster.
In a normal season the minors are done the first week of Sept and have been shut down for a month before the playoffs start. In an emergency, just called back some minor leaguers from home ... not that far off from playing so still some coverage.

Since at this point the alternate site is basically a prospect development pool ... part of that call may be the view of how the fall instructs play out.
Plus, given COVID, has to be some caution in adding a number of new players (after COVID protocols).
Not sure the upside for the team or player for what may only be 2-3 weeks.
