Quote from MrPadre19 on August 20, 2020, 1:53 pmI saw a story saying how the Giants might do well by trading Yastrzemski now.
While that might be a PR nightmare for them the guy isn't young...I think he's 30?
They aren't winning anything the next 2-4 years so he will basically be wasted.
If they can get a good haul for him this writer felt they should at least consider it.
I would certainly be interested in his bat in the lineup for the next few years...depending on the asking price of course.
I realize we need RH bats more...but this kid appears to be the real deal and his splits show he is just as good against LH pitching.
He was actually "better" last year against lefties.
Right now his OBP is .405 against LH and .455 against RH!
I know I'm dreaming....if anything he should go play in Boston....but someone else brought up the idea I'm just running with it!

He may be 30 but really productive and 4 years control ... currently at league minimum. Discussions start with Gore and then the Padres need to add. All-Star level player.
Would like to get him ... but not sure paying the price would be worth it.

Just thinking out loud.
No way we give up the #1 pitching prospect in baseball.

Quote from fenn68 on August 21, 2020, 5:49 pmApparently Castillo is throwing at PETCO from 100-120 feet trying to return from his lat strain.
Some optimism that he may return before the end of the season. Given his injury history ... not going to rush him and likely will give him a full ramp up period at the alternate site.
If he is ready and active by the 15th (I think) he is eligible for the playoff roster.

What a difference a year makes ... Yates and Pagan were both top line RP and adding Pomeranz allowed the rest to fall into non critical roles. Strahm was effective out of the pen. That would have been 4 deep ... 2 LH / 2 RH. Not even considering the projected upside of Munoz and Castillo ... so 6 deep.
Who is here today ... only Pagan (who has struggled) and Strahm. No team is that deep to effectively cover the loss of Yates, Pomeranz, Munoz, Castillo with Pagan struggling.
And yet the Padres are in 2nd place and on track for the playoffs.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 22, 2020, 6:21 amI assume they’ve considered this but why not bring Lucchesi up and use him out of the Pen?
I'm sure they see him as a Starter but in a game like last nights it sure would have been nice to have him to come in and go 3 innings after Richards.
Considering all our Starters are RH now....he would be a good choice in games like that.

I was thinking about that too after a LHP Pomeranz goes IL but the call up RHP Perdomo.
Since Lucchesi has never been a RP ... is it possible that his “warm up” time is too long and / or his “rebound” time from pitching in a game minimize the effective use in back to back games? Or maybe he has not shown improvement over his “problems” displayed in his first two starts this season. Could be as simple as he is not full healthy.
I have been wondering whether the Padres have been trying to convert Lucchesi into a RP at the alternate site ... he is way behind others in the SP pecking order. History of good early innings and a wipeout pitch should fit the mold.
Hard to know what is evolving at the alternative site ... so hard to speculate on current readiness.
