Quote from Brian Connelly on August 19, 2020, 12:00 pmYou can "hide" a guy like Guerra in a normal season if not contending & just let him take his lumps. But not in a playoff race where every game = 3. This year's Guerra would have been a good fit on LAST year's Padres. I just don't see what is going to suddenly overnight "change" for him to start succeeding. Guys like Stammen & Pagan have long track records it's logical they'll come back to.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 19, 2020, 1:04 pmIdeally, Padres could use Morejon like the Dodger use Gonsolin. Unfortunately, Gonsolin can and does go 5+ innings and maybe 75-85 pitches or so while Morejon taps out after maybe 40-50 pitches, not enough normally to get you to the 5th inning unless you want to roll the dice and face another physical breakdown. If we aren't going to use him in the rotation on a consistent basis, then he should have been sent down right after his start and a RP brought up to start the clock on the 10 days he has to stay down. If he's going to be an "opener", do you start him in lieu of Quantrill? I guess we'll know soon enough.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 19, 2020, 2:06 pmIt seems that Tingler is trying too hard to “stick to the plan” and doesn’t roll with what’s working.
It made sense to only let Morejon only go 3 and then pull him...if everything else worked as planned.
But it didn’t....the BP guys almost gave the game back again.
So IMO he needs to better adapt to what’s right in front of him instead of sticking with what they “hope” will work.
Morejon was dealing....maybe letting him go just one more inning would have changed everything.
You've got a 6 run lead.....why not let him go at least one more?
I may be wrong but it just seems he doesn’t make changes to the “plan” on the fly according to what’s actually happening regarding the bullpen.
IMO he should have left Pomeranz in to finish that inning also.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 19, 2020, 2:13 pmConcur with your observation. Managing a pitching staff has got to be the most difficult thing to do as a manager. What we don't know is who actually is available because of illness, minor injury, tired arm, etc. Should be getting more input from Rothschild in that regard and this is where I miss Balsley, who really seemed more in tune with running a bullpen.

Baez called up
Tingler said Baez could go up to 4 innings given how he has shown at the alternative site ... so maybe that "long relief option" and adding to the idea that Quantrill goes to late game situations.

Unknown Illness...minor injuries etc. would come into play more if he was leaving guys in too long.
In other words.....what we don’t know might explain why he doesn’t pull a guy.....it doesn’t help explain why he’s pulling them too soon.
But yes....handling the Pen is tough because if a guy pitches well the Mgr. is a genius for going to him...if he sucks(like we’ve seen a lot of so far) we use hindsight to ask why he even put the guy into the game.
There’s only so many guys to choose from.
But IMO that’s all the more reason to leave a guy in for an extra inning if he’s being successful.....like Morejon was and Pomeranz was.

Even I grudgingly agree with this RP for position player move. I like Baez up; think he may be more ready to help than Patino is right now. Pads clearly want as much length & mix/match as possible in pen... with good reason. I hope I'm wrong, but to me the Patino move feels forced, too early, and more out of desperation with the pen then a real clear role for him. Don't like how the usage this year affects his profile as a SP & his IP limitations NEXT season.
With Profar & Naylor (& France) to cover LF/DH, Garcia the # 1 PH, the pretty similar Olivares & Mateo were"buried". Mateo now absorbs whatever limited playing time would've gone to Olivares. The risk is taking the primary backup CF off active roster; but that's less important when they're at home; could reverse the decision (due to injury) if needed. On road he will have to go with the taxi squad to "be there" if needed.

Quote from fenn68 on August 20, 2020, 11:38 amTwo fold value:
- Padres really need to find a RP they can be more confident in for the playoff run ... can't unless they see him pitch .... with him up and they are using the other options ... could be a case of sorting and optioning / DFA of the low hanging fruit in September.
- Basically little use of Olivares AND Mateo being on the roster given their current usage and production in August:
- Oliveras: 2 for 20 ... 100/100/250 ... 8K ... and been grading out poorly on defense
- Mateo: 0 for 7 with 4K (that is not looking promising)
Mateo wins out since he can play both INF and OF .. has the speed factor for PR if needed ... and is out of options.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 20, 2020, 11:42 amUnless a trade is made in the 11 days, I think we'll see one of the young pitchers with options (Patino, Morejon, Baez) going down and our old friend, Almonte, brought up. Patino has not shown the command that he obviously showed at the alternate training site or he would not have been brought up as the "most ready" at the time of his promotion. This is why expectations of pitchers who have not pitched much above the AA level have to be tempered and Patino has not carved out a role that he seemed comfortable in. Getting back to Almonte, not a great OF and probably a less than current league average bat but he is a switch-hitter and has produced in the past. At least he's not as bad a hitter as Hedges, so that proves that almost anyone can run into a ball once in awhile or lay down a bunt. Need to see more from France or Almonte moves ahead of him from the right side.

Quote from fenn68 on August 20, 2020, 12:41 pmI am betting on a deal for a veteran bat ... probably a rental ... producing in 2020 ... that the Padres see as having value in the playoffs even if it just part-time DH / PH.
Based on the limited views ... this year ... on Almonte - Mateo - Olivares - France ... not going to rely on them in a clutch playoff role. With Garcia and Naylor providing LHH support ... a RHH would seem a good target.
Still think the value of a 15th pitcher exceeds a 14th position player ... even if the arm is not great. Does allow Tingler to not over tax the better arms in blowouts and allows them to sort though a lot of underperforming RP earlier to come up with the best core for the playoffs. Never, know if Patino ends up providing more value than Guerra in 2020 ... or even Johnson, Stammen.
======
I am beginning to warm to a serviceable LF based on Profar (much better in August) and Naylor who is hitting. So, a rental DH only might fit or a LF allowing Profar to roam and Naylor to DH.
As it stands, start searching SF - PITT - BOST - SEA - LAA - KC for options and in a week maybe DET or TEX.
