30-man Active O.D., 40-man MLB, 60-man "Taxi" Rosters

PreviousPage 39 of 52Next

Just to consider a different decision point in active roster design in Sept.

Early September is two weeks straight of games ... that justifies carrying 15 pitchers just to keep everyone fresher for when they are needed and not risk burnout/injury if heading for the playoffs.

The second half of September is filled with off days (and as of now no double headers) ... that takes the pressure off needing redundant pitchers and the Padres may benefit from an extra position player to give some of the starters some time off.

However, September 15th is the cutoff date for players eligible for playoff rosters ... have to be on the active MLB roster.

Sort of depends where the Padres are standings wise ... and how they view their best playoff roster configuration ... but on or about Sept 15 might see some strategic roster moves. Just harder to think that through with a 28 player roster and now the DH but I think they will (at some point) have extra innings games go without the current 10 inning rule.

Are the playoff rosters going to "revert" to 26-man?  Anyone know?

???  If that's true, does that mean your Active Roster ON Sept 15th (28) HAS to exactly be your Playoff Roster (28)?!?

That doesn't make sense.  Isn't it typically you have to be on the 40-Man Roster by a certain date to be playoff eligible?  Like the old "2nd" waiver/trade deadline date; had to change teams before that date to be playoff eligible for the new team...

This would make way more sense; have to promote prospects, waiver claim/trade by Sept 15th to be eligible to be selected for a playoff roster?   What a team composition needs to be to reach playoffs in a 15 games in a row push (5 SP) might be very different than the composition for a short playoff series with travel days.  Also usually get to make voluntary changes to that roster each time you advance; from the same 40-man limits as before.

My mistake ... September 15 establishes the players eligible for use in the playoffs ... so that should be on the 40 man roster.

I would expect that when the "dust settles" after the Trade Deadline, with an off day on Sept 1st, the Padres (& probably most teams) will "re-set" and fill their 60-man pools.  Might as well max development & depth for very little cost for as many as possible.

Pads sit at 56 now less Eickhoff.   Could be a deadline addition, but assuming 56...  my first 2 adds would be Jorge Ona & Anderson Espinoza.   Ona REALLY needs the heavy AB's he could get vs top prospect pitching.  Espinoza is at the 16 month post 2nd TJ Surgery mark.  He could "rehab" for the remainder of the season without wasting an option being technically "sent down".

The last 2 spots I would definitely add arms.  My choice would be Jake Nix & Miguel Diaz.  Diaz would be an (extreme) dark horse to actually get on roster if he is back to full health.  He definitely has MLB stuff; bad development curve as a Rule 5 with a major injury.  He will be a Minors FA.  Pads control Nix next year I believe (2015 draftee).  Assuming healthy, maybe time to convert to bullpen.

Hadn't thought much about Ona and Espinoza other than they were already on the 40 man.  I thought because of that they were already in the mix at the alternate training site but I guess there are administrative hurdles to overcome before that can be done.  To me, Ona is one of those guys who develops late and is limited defensively to LF or be a DH.  I'm curious as to where he is health wise and whether that great start last year was for real - something like Grisham finding himself in the minors in 2019.  Anything from Espinoza would be a plus.  Saw him pitch in that annual game against the Rangers and he had electric stuff - at least equal to Patino.  Probably no longer a starter option, but if back, maybe a high leverage, closer option ala Munoz or Castillo.  We have arms, but they need to all get healthy and recapture what made them top prospects in the past.

If as rumored MLB runs an expanded program this fall in AZ (AZL or otherwise) ... would expect to see both of them there.

Not sure adding anyone to the 60 now helps them all that much ... maybe 30 days with some time for getting into baseball shape and then fitting into the development play of the other prospects. Once a team is out of the playoffs ... expect the alternate site to be wrapped up .. maybe even sooner for one level of the lower prospects.

Yes, neither guy is in the 60-man pool.  Espinoza on 60-IL back in Feb, Ona got hurt after getting optioned (in original brief minors camp I guess?) & they were talking about him working out in SD & "being added to pool soon", but he never was.

Maybe true for Espinoza, but don't really see the harm in him "beginning" under coaches' eyes in Sept.  Already getting full MLB (prorated) $ anyway.  Main thing is to preserve his (2) options.  I have Ona gettting 1st season 40-man roster guy in minors $ also, so again, not even adding $ cost to add him, and he needs EVERY AB he can get to make up for last year.  Think they need to get to where the door is closed on trade deadline, then we may see it.

Good point on potential "AFL" though... might want to pull back on some especially younger prospects IP if they're also going to do that.  But still need the depth guys to be called upon... different from a typical season where Minors ends a month earlier...
