Called up Torrens and France.
======
with supposedly tomorrow looking for a starter either Patino (or Patino and a bullpen day) get the start or the add Morejon (reported to be on the traveling squad) tomorrow unless they make a trade.
I like the idea of Torrens getting some time behind the plate sooner than later....time to see if he can do the job
France needs to just see ball...hit ball hard.
Patino or Morejon ......The time is now to see what these guys have. Either one would be a good addition to the rotation if they can show the moxey it takes to pitch / start at this level and not let the moment get to big. A trade right now would be a panic move in my opinion and you never come out on top when you make a panic move.....you over pay for non impact type player....a trade to make a trade is not always a good trade and don't give up ANY of your young , controllable pitching.

Yates would need six-plus weeks to recover from the procedure.

Morejon will be up for Perdomo. Interesting to see who gets the start; might be stretched out Morejon.
They probably won't DFA Perdomo b/c: 1) they don't "have" to for the 40-man, and 2) all the RP injuries. But he's at a crossroads with the Pads.... might as well look at someone younger with upside going forward. ERA 8+, WHIP almost 2.00, BB > K... not doing anything to justify staying up over the good young SP @ Alt site.
My thought with the DFA is to save a little $ if another team claims him (arb salary); other teams don't have the well of top 10 SP prospects MLB ready at alt site like us. It would open a "soon to be needed" roster spot (Pads probably don't really want to 45-day Pham, Castillo, or even Yates), and extremely likely to be non-tendered in offseason anyway. If no one claims him, still have him on 60-man but gain a roster spot.

Quote from fenn68 on August 18, 2020, 6:43 amIf as we suspect that Morejon gets the call-up today ... probably see him as the starter since many seem to think Patino is more comfortable coming in in relief plus as the “new guy” for this season might allow Morejon to get into rhythm with a normal pre-game warm-up.
Agree Perdomo is the arm to go down ... but doubt they DFA him until they have to (would not save much at this point) and given the league’s injury trend may need a number RP from the alternative site before this season ends. He is not good but was “serviceable” last year when you look at his innings / production vs. RP across the league. Don’t want to add a prospect who doesn’t have to be added this winter (and is not ready). Someone would claim him just based on his “stuff”.

Quote from fenn68 on August 18, 2020, 6:53 amWe might see a position player go down depending on how Myers feels and availability ... he was looking fine on the bench last night. Think with all the recent moves they are sitting with the extra position player and short a pitcher if 13 position player is the new norm. Probably want the keep the workload down on every RP in this extended string of games to minimize the burnout / injuries.
One scenario (if Myers is not ready) ... add Morejon ... option Perdomo today since worked yesterday and pen basically rested ... option a position player when Myers is ready to go ... add Baez. Hopefully Baez > Perdomo.

Position players: Who? Can't be Profar, Garcia, Mateo (no options). Naylor for Pham. Leaves France or Olivares. Olivares with Myers gimpy & Pham gone seems nuts, and France was just recalled. Don't like losing Pham, but it in essence opens up that "extra" spot that Naylor & France were sort of "competing for" at DH.
With 36 games to go, the "extra" position player afforded by the 28-man roster has WAY more value than the 10th bullpen Arm (who by ability is about the 13th best bullpen arm on Pads). We have platoons @ 2B & LF (or RF) with Cronenworth/Profar, Naylor/Olivares. Importantly, Olivares might far more frequently defensively sub in for Naylor; wouldn't for Pham. France primary DH. Garcia primary PH. Profar true utility. Mateo will be used creatively to pinch run, PH (bunt situations), double switch for defense... might not get many AB's, but could help win a game or 2.
A big dynamic difference between P's & position players, is Almonte is now the only guy on 40 at the alt site. Can't "rotate" position players up/down like pen arms, and game to game it's harder to project who you might need the next day b/c it depends on how the game goes. All their availability is important. In the pen, if you keep Perdomo today, he can't pitch anyway because he went yesterday. 2-3 guys/day typically aren't available. I realize you can't option guys daily, but you CAN exchange a guy every 2-4 days & make it work.

Quote from Brian Connelly on August 18, 2020, 9:22 amI do think/hope you're right on Baez. Two possibilities with Morejon that might depend on his performance today:
- This is a spot start as 6th SP, and HE goes back down tomorrow for someone; very possibly Baez. This seems most logical & likely. It would set up all 5 SP incl Cal to go on an extra day of rest leading into the off day; so their next turn through will also be on an extra day rest. Baez would be the available length tomorrow, assuming Patino also pitches today & Quantrill is penciled in to start on 8/21.
- Morejon "wows" & goes 5 strong innings. COULD keep him up as 5th SP, lined up to pitch the last game before the off day. Quantrill would go back to pen, with either he or Patino available tomorrow. Baez not recalled.

Quote from fenn68 on August 18, 2020, 12:01 pmAs expected, the Padres have called up right-hander Adrian Morejon from their alternate training site. The team made this announcement in advance of Morejon’s scheduled start against the Rangers this afternoon. Righty Luis Perdomo was optioned to the alternate training site to create roster space.

Looks like option #2! But HAVE to recall someone; for some depth/length, even though Quantrill is available too. The obvious move is for Patino to go down. But I don't know what to make of Javier Guerra. Mark Grant raves about him every outing; clean delivery, ends up in great position, his pitches move, he's routinely 100 mph, only 3 BB, and > K/IP....
...but guys are hitting .500+ against him, leading to 3.00 WHIP, almost 15 ERA.... he oozes potential, but in a year like this with a competitive team, I don't know if the Pads can wait on a guy who's the definition of a "project".. what situation CAN they use him if not up 6-0? Having no options doesn't help. It just looks like he doesn't really have a 2nd pitch. Always falls behind & guys sit dead red & pound him. Should be challenging guys up in the zone, and I don't remember seeing it once.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 19, 2020, 11:05 amWe saw this earlier from Guerra, but not lately. Seems his confidence is shaken and he's a little gun-shy - remember he's only been pitching for 2 seasons and very few innings under his belt. Tough to learn your trade in the majors. Still like his potential but got to be hidden away as one of the last guys out of the pen in true routs - in this day and age of the juiced ball, a 6 run lead is not a safe lead.
